The article is just a voice in the discussion on problems that should be dealt with by offices for monuments research and documentation (the so-called bbdz) attached to district offices for monuments conservation. The author’s opinion is based on the experience of „bbdz” in Lublin opened in 1971. According to the regulations of "bbdz" in Lublin its aim is to carry out plans of the higher state administration of Lublin district in the field of monuments' protection. Thus, as can be seen, bbdz plays a servicing role in relation to district monuments conservator. Because a district conservator operates within a district office as a single person and does not have his own administrative body, this function must be performed by bbdz. Thus, bbdz is both an office and documentation research atelier. Until now the majority of operations performed by bbdz consisted in attending to current and organisational, matters. The preparation of historic conservation studies, carrying out research work and drawing files are done as a part-time job outside bbdz. The aim should be to have such a number of the personnel in bbdz that would allow for research and documentation activities to dominate over administration operations. On the basis of the Lublin bbdz the author draws attention to the third line of activities of this institution going beyond problems directly connected with a given district. She means here the undertaking of certain methodological problems. Bbdz in Lublin was the initiator and organizer of all-Poland seminars and conferences on "The Role of Monuments in the Formation of Social Awareness" (1974), "Problems of the Protection of Urban Historic Complexes on the Example of Kazimierz Dolny" (1972), "Problems of the Protection of Monuments of Motorization” (1983). During a conference devoted to "The System of the Protection of Monuments in Poland” (1980) a founder’s committee of the Association for Monuments Conservation was brought to life.
