Using available oral and written sources, this study attempts to at least partially reconstruct bibliophile activities at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design, which primarily took place at František Muzika’s studio in the form of Edice speciálky Františka Muziky (František Muzika’s special studio series) between 1949 and 1970; it also takes relevant account of the bibliophile editions involved in final year and diploma work at Karel Svolinský‘s studio. The fact that these works included a number of titles, authors and/or débuts (Vratislav Effenberger, Karel Hynek, Jiří Kuběna, Věra Linhartová, Milan Nápravník, Ladislav Novák and Jan M. Tomeš, Texty experimentální poezie - Experimental poetry texts), which at that time were difficult to publish, indicates that there were other alternative publication space cases apart from "pure" samizdat. Hence the text also implicitly makes a contribution towards the study of "grey zone" issues that have not previously been comprehensively charted.

Studie se s využitím dostupných orálních a písemných pramenů pokouší alespoň částečně zrekonstruovat bibliofilskou činnost VŠUP, vzešlou především z ateliéru Františka Muziky v podobě Edice speciálky Františka Muziky vycházející v letech 1949-1970; v relevantní míře ovšem přihlíží rovněž k bibliofiliím vznikajícím jako závěrečné ročníkové a diplomové práce v ateliéru Karla Svolinského. Fakt, že se mezi těmito pracemi objevila řada titulů/autorských osobností a/nebo autorských debutů (V. Effenberger, K. Hynek, J. Kuběna, V. Linhartová, M. Nápravník, L. Novák, J. M. Tomeš, Texty experimentální poezie), které by v dané době bylo oficiálně těžko možné vydat, ukazuje, že existovaly i jiné případy alternativního publikačního prostoru, než byl "ryzí" samizdat. Text se tak zároveň implicitně stává i příspěvkem ke studiu dosud stále komplexně nezmapované problematiky tzv. šedé zóny.

This study examines critical editions of Máj by Karel Hynek Mácha in the period after the discovery of the poem manuscript in 1916. Hence it focuses primarily on publishing procedures in the ten editions (1919-1949) by Karel Janský, while also examining other important parallel editorial undertakings, editions from the previous period and editions that came out after the last critical edition in the Knihovna klasiků series (1959). This exposition focuses primarily on how both prominent Mácha editors set out their conception of the chronology of both primary sources: the first printing (1836) and the poem manuscript. It subsequently analyses which method of working with both sources they developed from this conception, and it focuses on a detailed analysis of the editing proces, i.e. on determining the phenomena which the editors considered to be errors within the text of the poem, their correction and what is known as the linguistic preparation of the text. The study shows developments in the approaches of both editors, the changes in the extent and method both sources were contaminated and in the application of the diplomatic approach, while also following the ongoing application of a methodologically different editing process method, which aimed to modernize and harmonize the published text. This process is observed within the context of the domestic discussion at that time on the extent and method for correcting the texts of the classics. The present description of changes in the text of critical editions of Máj is one of the bases for the forthcoming new edition of the poem in the Hybrid Scholarly Edition.

This study analyses the editorial strategies deployed on the complete, critically verified edition of correspondence between two prominent 19th century writers, Božena Němcová and Karel Havlíček Borovský (the editions are recent: the first came about 2003–2007, while so far only the first volume for 2016 is available from the second one). In the opinion of the author the concentrated material provided the editors with a highly challenging task, as it required not only the application of specific textological procedures, but it also raised the issue of the overall conception of editorial work. Its basis was the more or less acknowledged effort to reconcile the twofold, apparently contradictory, options for presenting a private letter, when on the one hand the letter is conceived as a valuable historical source presenting various cultural, political and social contexts of the period and on the other hand it can be understood as a literary work of its kind (particularly if its author is a creative individual such as Němcová and Havlíček).

Předmětem této studie je analýza edičních strategií, které byly uplatněny v případě souborného, kriticky ověřeného vydání korespondence dvou významných spisovatelů 19. století, Boženy Němcové a Karla Havlíčka Borovského (edice vznikly v nedávné době, první z nich mezi lety 2003-2007, z druhé je k dispozici prozatím první svazek z roku 2016). Soustředěný materiál podle soudu autorky připravil editorům velmi náročný úkol. Vyžádal si totiž nejen uplatnění specifických textologických postupů, ale postavil je též před otázku samotné koncepce ediční práce. Její podstatou bylo více či méně přiznané úsilí vyrovnat se s dvojí, zdánlivě protikladnou,možností prezentace soukromého dopisu, kdy je na jedné straně dopis pojímán jako cenný historický pramen přibližující různé kulturní, politické či společenské souvislosti doby a na straně druhé mu může být rozuměno jako literárnímu dílo svého druhu (zvláště je-li jeho autorem tvůrčí osobnost typu Němcové či Havlíčka).

On the basis of two new publications associated with Richard Weiner the man and his work, i.e. an edition of Weiner’s French correspondence with members of the French group Le Grand Jeu, published under the title Correspondances croisées 1927–1937 (eds. Erika Abrams and Billy Dranty) and a collection of early prose works compiled by Michal Jareš (The Broken Thread and Other Prose), this article reflects on selected issues, problems and themes involving textology, editology and text interpretation.

This article presents the post-mortem organization of Jan Hanč’s literary texts (1916–1963) as an open question. As a rule, the writer did not date his own works and, with the exception of three handwritten notebooks, did not put them in any order. In those cases where such information is provided within the text itself, we must understand it as an element of artistic stylization rather than evidence of documentation, or indication of the origin of the work. This article analyzes the work of the publishers of Hanč’s selected writings at the end of the 1960s, with regard to the author’s manuscripts in their material form.

Inspired by A. Macurová’s analysis of various editions of fairy tales by Božena Němcová, the contribution compares six different editions of the fairy tale Otesánek by Karel Jaromír Erben. It shows that some editions (especially those published after the year 2000) contain textual changes that may seem subtle (such as the change in verbal aspect or in the degree of directness that the death of Otesánek is described with) may change the overall meaning of the text, the picture of the main characters, their possible “guilt” and the “moral message” of the story. Illustrations accompanying the texts and the question of how children of pre-school age understand the fairy tale are discussed as well.

The article describes the state of Czech textual criticism at the time of the publication of Editologie (2018), a methodological compendium in which its main authors, Michal Kosák and Jiří Flaišman, summarize, evaluate and elaborate procedures established by the handbook Editor and Text in 1971. One of the characteristics of today’s situation in the field of textology is the existence of multiple book series. The Variants series (Edice Varianty), which was launched in 2009, focuses on both original works and translations of textual criticism. The Hybrid Scholarly Edition series (Kritická hybridní edice), starting in 2012, is released in both electronic and print media, allowing for scientific and readership editions. The oldest series, The Czech Library (Česká knižnice), which began in 1997, provides a platform for the professional preparation of texts, from the earliest publications to living authors. The publishing industry has been simultaneously sidelining the textological profession, and the contemporary reader is faced with an increasing number of unidentified editions.
