Praca jest bardzo ważnym wymiarem życia ludzkiego. Podstawowym środowiskiem, które wychowuje przez pracę i do pracy jest rodzina. W latach 2006–2008 badano 176 rodzin (803 rodziców i dzieci) województwa lubelskiego. Celem badań było m.in. opisanie wychowania przez pracę w rodzinie na wsi i w mieście, na przykładzie obowiązków domowych. Inne aspekty wychowania przez pracę zostały opisane w publikacji książkowej1. Okazało się, że prawie wszystkie dzieci posiadają swoje obowiązki domowe. Jednocześnie jedynie kilka procent wydaje się przeciążonych nimi. Dzieci wykonują czynności samoobsługowe oraz pomagają rodzicom w pracach domowych. Dziadkowie odgrywają małą rolę w podziale prac – zarówno jako osoby wykonujące pewne czynności, jak i wymagające pomocy. Prace w domach są w dużym stopniu podzielone na męskie i kobiece. Podział ten widać również częściowo wśród obowiązków stawianych dzieciom. W większości rodzin nauka jest uważana za ważniejszą, niż pomoc w domu. Ogólnie można stwierdzić, że zdecydowana większość badanych rodzin stawia dzieciom odpowiednie do wieku wymagania związane z obowiązkami domowymi.

Work is a very important element of human life. The family is the basic environment of education by work and for work. In the years 2006–2008 we examined 176 families (803 children and parents) from lubelskie voivodship. One of the aims of our research was to describe the upbringing by work in families living in towns and villages of lubelskie voivodship. It turned out that nearly every child has its own duties at home. At the same time, just a few percent of children seem to be overworked. The children do everyday activities (such as eating, dressing up, washing themselves etc.) and help parents in everyday duties at home. The grandparents do not perform a big role in housework – neither as those that do it nor as people who need help. The housework is divided, to a high degree, into a male part and a female part. The division is also partly visible as far as children are concerned. In most families education (homework) is more important than the help with housework. On the whole, we can say that most of the families demand from their children that they should take part in the housework in accordance with their age.
