Narrative identity is recognized as a process and viewed in dynamic terms, as an entity subject to constant changes in the course of one’s life. It is assumed that an increasing need to make changes in one’s history of life emerges in middle adulthood. A generative script is revealed, containing a plan to become part of the lives of future generations. The process of creative integration of one’s life story may gather momentum in late adulthood, when individuals explore their identity in the context of their life’s work. In order to test the above assumptions, narratives of participants aged 65-80 years who were wives/mothers/grandmothers or husbands/fathers/grandfathers during their lives were analyzed. Six main themes characteristic of life stories in late adulthood were identified, along with groups of traits, behaviors and values which participants wished to pass on to subsequent generations. The narratives clearly featured a generative motivation and the need to integrate one’s story.

The purpose of this theoretical paper is to organize and elaborate on the conception of stages in the ritualization of experience. Erikson frames the ritualization as a process of playful adaptation that individualizes formal and informal ritual practices. Despite the many inspirations Erikson brought to psychology and play theory, the relation between ontogenesis, ritualization, and playfulness is not fully explored. This paper advocates the important role of playfulness during human development drawing on conclusions from contemporary research and play theory. Subsequently, the eight stages of ritualization are put in a context of ego integrity construction. According to Erikson, play forms the mental space in mind and reality that enables ego to develop mastery over reality and achieve greater coherence. The later stages of life are emphasized here to propose the potential role of playfulness in successful aging and coping with death. Playfulness is then discussed as an idealistic principle of general development and as the specific style of ego integrity.

Pointou tohoto teoretického článku je utřídění a rozpracování méně známé koncepce ritualizace zkušenosti Erika H. Eriksona. Proces ritualizace určitých ústředních principů činnosti Erikson považuje za důležité pojítko ontogeneze jednotlivce a socio-kulturního prostředí. Důležitou charakteristikou tohoto procesu je ideál hravé adaptace společenských rituálů. Eriksonovo dílo v tomto ohledu zůstalo nedokončené. Přestože autor svým pojetím hry inspiroval psychologii i herní teorii, spojitost mezi celkovým vývojem, ritualizací a hravostí nebyla provedena. Tento příspěvek nejprve obhajuje směrodatnost hravosti ve vývoji z optiky Eriksona a aktuální, leč zatím nepočetné literatury na toto téma. Následně je předložených osm stadií ritualizace usazeno do širšího kontextu budování ego integrity. Hra formulovaná jako prostor rozšiřující kontrolu ega nad sebou samým, přechodovým prostorem hry s objekty a vnějším světem je zde chápana ve smyslu nástroje k dosažení psychické integrity. V tomto duchu jsou akcentovány pozdní etapy života představující otevření nových možností hravosti, schopnost zachovat vývojovou kontinuitu a adaptivně se vyhnout strachu z blížící smrti. Nabídnutý model sice poskytuje obecné mechanizmy vývoje, ale bezpečnější je předpokládat, že se místy jedná o specifickou linii zrání. Hravá podoba ego integrity není jediným platným stylem duševní koherence. Důležité je zdůraznit, že hravost pozdního věku je v E riksonově podání příkladem idealizace stáří požehnaného kvalitami mysli dítěte, tedy velmi vzácného úkazu.
