The paper aims at (1) presenting several difficulties that may be encountered in the process of translation of a popular-science text about history, and (2) giving reasons why this kind of a text is worth to pay attention to. I assume that the translation may serve an educational purpose as an example text used in teaching future translators and developing their translation skills. The translated version of the text into Polish may be a source of information in the field of social history, and more precisely in the field of research in the history of women in Victorian era. The author of the article on ideals of womanhood in the Victorian Britain is Lynn Abrams – a historian at the University of Glasgow. The article was published in 2001 on the BBC website that deals with popularizing the history of Great Britain. I intend to disseminate this text in popular-science magazine that deals with social history or gender history as a source of knowledge about social, cultural and political living conditions of women in Victorian era.

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie przykładowych trudności, jakie mogą się wiązać z tłumaczeniem tekstu popularnonaukowego o tematyce historycznej oraz podanie powodów, dla których tego rodzaju tekst może zasługiwać na uwagę polskich czytelników. Zakładam, że samo tłumaczenie może pełnić funkcję edukacyjną jako przykładowy tekst wykorzystywany w szkoleniu z doskonalenia warsztatu z zakresu przekładu osób przygotowujących się do pracy w zawodzie tłumacza pisemnego. Sam zaś tekst udostępniony polskiemu czytelnikowi może stanowić źródło informacji z zakresu historii społecznej, a dokładnie badań nad historią kobiet w epoce wiktoriańskiej. Autorką tekstu o ideałach kobiecości w wiktoriańskiej Brytanii jest Lynn Abrams. Artykuł historyczki wykładającej obecnie na Uniwersytecie w Glasgow ukazał się w 2001 roku na stronie internetowej BBC poświęconej popularyzowaniu wiedzy o historii Wielkiej Brytanii. Zamierzam rozpowszechnić ten tekst jako źródło wiedzy o społecznych, kulturowych i politycznych warunkach życia kobiet w epoce wiktoriańskiej w czasopiśmie popularnonaukowym zajmującym się tematyką historii społecznej lub historii gender.

Visual kei is a name defining the style of dress, specific makeup, fancy hairstyle, specific type of music, diversity, freedom, mixing and combining genres. It is also creaton of yourself, something more than just role playing, theatralization or the desire to stand out in the crowd - it is a lifestyle inspired by the inexhaustible source of possibilities. The following article is focused on the Gothic variation of Visual kei, created by the popular musician Mana. He created a new world that quickly inspired fans of the genre, combined with Japanese alternative music (j-rock) and gothic inspirations. He also created a recognizable image that fans can easily take over (Lolita Fashion style). Moreover, I would like to point out how the receception of the Visual kei in Poland looks like. Why is this trend not so popular? Is Visual kei only a musical fusion or just a specific image? Or maybe the current reception is difficult because of the fact that lot of changes have occurred within the visual kei itself - sometimes it is hard to tell what specific kei style the band is presenting and whether it is still a particular style of music or just a peculiar image.

Visual kei to nazwa określająca styl ubioru, specyficzny makijaż, wymyślną fryzurę, specyficzny rodzaj muzyki, różnorodność, dowolność, mieszanie i łączenie gatunków. Visual kei to kreacja siebie, coś więcej niż tylko odgrywanie roli, teatralizacja czy chęć wyróżnienia się w tłumie – to styl życia inspirowany nieprzebranym źródłem możliwości. W artykule zwracam szczególną uwagę na gotycką odmianę Visual kei, której twórcą jest popularny muzyk Mana. Artysta stworzył zupełnie nowy świat, który bardzo szybko zainspirował fanów gatunku. Pokazał, w jaki sposób można łączyć japońską muzykę alternatywną (j-rock) z gotyckimi inspiracjami, stworzył także rozpoznawalny wizerunek, który fani mogą bez problemu odtwarzać (styl Lolita Fashion). Chcę również wskazać, jak wygląda recepcja Visual kei w Polsce. Dlaczego nurt ten nie jest popularny? Czy do fanów przemawia fuzja muzyczna a może tylko specyficzny wizerunek? A może obecny odbiór jest utrudniony przez fakt, że spore zmiany zaszły w obrębie samego Visual kei – czasami ciężko określić jaki konkretnie styl kei prezentuje dany zespół i czy jest to jeszcze jakiś konkretny styl muzyczny, czy już tylko osobliwy wizerunek.

Utopia and Dystopia in Selected Representations of Modern Urban Space Abstract: The article’s departure point is an assumption of a close relationship between the construction of urban space and the projected identity of its inhabitants. Within the context of late-modern architecture this relationship opens up a discursive space for ideologically-motivated and often utopian visions inspired by the modernist desire to produce a new subject liberated from the socio-historical bias and hierarchical entanglements. Yet upon closer analysis utopian architectural projects – including those represented by literature and the arts – reveal their totalizing aspirations thus blurring the boundary between utopia and dystopia. In the article, the latter is illustrated through a historical analysis of selected literary texts and by particular postulates of modernist architecture included in the Athens Charter and in practical terms represented by large-scale urban housing projects, such as Katowice’s Millennial Housing Estate whose critical evaluation takes place against the background of broader cultural operations reflected in the concept of cognitive capitalism. The last part of the paper is devoted to the phenomenon of virtualization of urban space and its translocation to the virtual sphere, which – following both postmodern critics and virtual culture theorists – becomes a new model of individualized urban existence. W kontekście architektury późno-nowoczesnej związek ten otwiera dyskursywną przestrzeń dla podbudowanych ideologicznie i nierzadko utopijnych wizji związanych z modernistycznym pragnieniem stworzenia nowego podmiotu wyzwolonego z historycznych zaszłości i społeczno-hierarchicznych uwikłań. Poddane bliższej analizie architektoniczne projekty o utopijnym podłożu – również te obecne w reprezentacjach i literackich i artystycznych – ujawniają jednak swoje totalizujące aspiracje zacierając tym samym granicę pomiędzy utopią a dystopią. Artykuł ilustruje tę ostatnią poprzez analizę historycznych przykładów literackich oraz wybranych postulatów architektury modernistycznej zawartych w Karcie Ateńskiej i w praktyce reprezentowanych wielkomiejskimi projektami budowlanymi jaki stanowi katowickie Osiedle Tysiąclecia, którego omówienie zostaje dokonane w szerszym kontekście współczesnych zmian kulturowych odzwierciedlonych w koncepcji kapitalizmu kognitywnego.
