The main purpose of this article is to portray the complex mechanism of taming the strangespace of Lower Silesia in Zyta Oryszyn’s polyphonic novel Saving Atlantis. The central issue underdiscussion is the analysis of the multifaceted categories of familiarity and strangeness in the literaryrepresentation of space created by the author. Another important point considered is the answerto the question whether, and to what extent, the acceptance of the new reality and identification withthe new homeland are possible. Finally, the process of searching or reconstructing one’s own identityis illustrated as situated between a tragedy and a new beginning, between the Polish and the Germanidentities, between familiarity and strangeness.

Although research on humorous practices of Anglo-Australians has received much attention, the understanding of those practices by members of various multilingual communities in Australia has not been much studied. In this paper, we look at metapragmatic comments on concept familiarity in relation to conversational humour, particularly focusing on Mandarin Chinese speakers’ perceptions of conversational humour in Australian English. In order to explore what role ‘familiarity’ plays in (inter-)cultural conceptualisation of humour, we analyse interview data where speakers of Mandarin Chinese provide their metapragmatic comments on humorous exchanges among Australians. Drawing on approximately 8.2 hours of interview data elicited by a segment from the reality television gameshow Big Brother 2012, i.e., a teasing sequence between two acquainted persons, it is suggested that the concept of familiarity is the one most frequently alluded to in the theme of how participants ‘draw the boundary’ between intimates and acquaintances. From the analysis it emerged that Mandarin Chinese speakers’ evaluations of humorous exchanges in Australian English are driven by their culturally-informed perceptions that are conceptualised through various emic notions, e.g. guanxi (‘interpersonal relationship’), various labels for classifying different relational distance, and qiji (‘opportune moment’). The findings of this exploratory paper suggest that the role of ‘familiarity’ in relation to humour is crucial in the perception of appropriateness of humorous practices in interaction, especially across cultures.

The study presents the preliminary results of a survey examining knowledge about local natural monuments among students in different grades. We found that their knowledge is poor and critically needs to be improved. Since the students seem to rely mainly on the Internet and their smart devices, we propose that a type of outdoor class be held, which must be supported by multimedia. The study presented here was conducted in Zielona Góra, in 11 schools of four types or grades.

This work aims at exploring the influence of selected factors that have received little attention in the past on ecotourism destination loyalty within the context of a developing country. The factors are destination image, familiarity, information search behaviour, involvement and travel motivation. The research was conducted on ecotourists visiting Malaysia who were approached on site and assisted to complete the survey instrument. The sample size was 813, representing a response rate of 47%. Hypotheses were tested using Structural Equation Model. It was found that while there are no linear relationships between the tested variables and destination loyalty, there are findings from the study that offer some managerial implications towards the industry.

Short-term memory (STM) search, as investigated within the Sternberg paradigm, is usually described as exhaustive rather than self-terminated, although the debate concerning these issues is still hot. We report three experiments employing a modified Sternberg paradigm and show that whether STM search is exhaustive or self-terminated depends on task conditions. Specifically, STM search self-terminates as soon as a positive match is found, whereas exhaustive search occurs when the STM content does not contain a searched item. Additionally, we show that task conditions influence whether familiarity- or recollection-based strategies dominate STM search performance. Namely, when speeding up the tempo of stimuli presentation increases the task demands, people use familiarity-based retrieval more often, which results in faster but less accurate recognition judgments. We conclude that STM search processes flexibly adapt to current task conditions and finally propose two-phase model of STM search.

The article presents a continuation of research on the space of beach bars in Wrocław, observed in 2018, which was aimed to evaluate the space of these places with a particular focus on their operation (program + function). The results of the evaluation were compared with the official public spaces of the city. The main aim of this juxtaposition was to show the most significant similarities and differences between the two types of spaces and thus to explore the strengths and weaknesses of urban spaces, which could be helpful in their enrichment and development. Particular attention was paid to all those elements of the programme and functions which could strengthen social interaction – living in these spaces. An indirect aim was to answer the question raised in the title of the importance of ownership for the operation of spaces in a contemporary city (including beach bars). Both objectives are linked, allowing to check the initial assumption. An important conclusion from the research carried out is that in the assessment of residency-oriented space – the long stay of people, much more important, apart from the possibility of meeting different needs, seems to be the freedom of behaviour today, and this is certainly more difficult in urban spaces than in even fenced, but ingeniously conceived beach bar spaces. The issue of (lack of) “familiarity”, in other words the relationship of dependence between the scope of control and the freedom of behaviour and above all the freedom to decide – the possibility of making independent, not imposed choices, is also worth considering.

In this essay about the philosophy of human corporeality Böhme asks about the sense of the I—body relation. He enters a polemic with Hegel, who wrote about the self- appropriation of the own body in acts of will, and points to passive acts of bodily sensing like experiencing pain or fear as that which builds an awareness of the own body’s “mineness.” Böhme calls this awareness affected self-givenness, linguistically articulated by the pronouns “mine” and “me,” which are genetically precedent to awareness and the pronoun “I”. Against this categorial background Böhme considers the argumentative role both these philosophical models of the I—body relation could play in contemporary debates on the diverse cultural forms in which the human body has been commercialised.

In the spring of 1568, Uluç Ali Pasha, a Christian convert to Islam born in the Spanish viceroyalty of Naples, became the new Ottoman governor of Algiers. Subsequently, Phillip II of Spain tried to establish a dialogue with him. To conquer the city without having to resort to a military expedition, the king of Spain sent Francesco Gasparo, a Corsican merchant, to Algiers. This article aims to shed light on the Spanish diplomatic practice used in the dialogue with the Ottoman Governors of Algiers during the sixteenth century. To do so, we have had to move away from the traditional focus on the study of agreements and opt for a more holistic approach of the diplomatic event. Diplomacy is no longer seen as a simple political relationship capable of establishing an agreement between two parties during a specific time, but as a permanent practice defined by a complex structure. Thus, the article focuses on the agents and practices used during the Spanish negotiation with Uluç Ali to assess the tenets underpinning this type of diplomatic interaction. Gasparo’s mission enables us to reflect on the structure of Spanish diplomacy in the Early Modern Mediterranean. The Corsican merchant’s experience in Algiers reveals the presence of a specific dialogic pattern between the Iberian and Maghreb coasts and how it was consolidated during the sixteenth century. This article endeavours thus to analyse the characteristic elements and principles of what seems to be a specific diplomatic model.

The subject of this paper was to present the results of a survey concerning the recognition and assessment of synthetic landscape features in the form of tradition, identity and familiarity, conducted on the area of the Mazowieckie Voivodeship. The aim of the study was to identify areas distinguished by local and regional tradition, cultivation of rituals and customs, the occurrence of people's attachment to a place, or specific and characteristic features of material components that are details of space for the surveyed administrative units, as well as obtaining information on both tangible and intangible evidence of tradition. The synthetic features of the landscape, i.e. tradition, identity and familiarity, indicated in the Regulation of the Council of Ministers of 11 January 2019 on the preparation of landscape audits were also recognized and evaluated. The survey was carried out among the inhabitants of the Mazowieckie Voivodeship and covered all NUTS 5 administrative units (municipalities). The research was carried out using a questionnaire developed by the Mazovian Office for Regional Planning (Mazowieckie Biuro Planowania Regionalnego – MBPR) in Warsaw, using four methods of conducting questionnaire surveys – CAWI, CATI, CAPI, PAPI. A total of 6 160 responses were collected. On this basis, the obtained data was analyzed in terms of the structure of the assessment of synthetic landscape features and the values of the indicators of tradition, identity and familiarity were given for each municipality in the voivodeship. The results of the study were compared with the desk research conducted earlier. On the basis of the research, it was found that there is a high attachment to tradition in municipalities that are the centres of their ethnographic regions, centres of local folklore development, and a much lower level in urban and urban-rural municipalities of the Mazowieckie Voivodeship. At the same time, the vast majority of the inhabitants of the Mazowieckie Voivodeship feel a connection with their place of residence. It does not mean, however, that the level of participation in social life of one's town or city is similar. It is expressed by a moderate level of involvement, and in large cities there is no interest in the matters of the local community.

Dokonano także rozpoznania i oceny syntetycznych cech krajobrazu, tj. tradycji, tożsamości i swojskości, wskazanych w Rozporządzeniu Rady Ministrów z dnia 11 stycznia 2019 r. w sprawie sporządzania audytów krajobrazowych. Badanie to wykonano wśród mieszkańców województwa mazowieckiego i objęło swoim zasięgiem wszystkie jednostki administracyjne NUTS 5 (gminy).

The aim of the article is to analyze Jerzy Bandrowski’s reportage, which was published on the pages of “The Illustrated Weekly” in 1919. The reportage is examined through the prism of the information strategy adopted by the weekly after Poland regained independence. Such information strategy involved searching for new forms of expression, themes and motives in the shifting political and cultural situation. The analysis reveals that the reportage, on the one hand, is a continuation of the current model of presenting Asian distinctness (exoticism), and on the other hand, it is an attempt to offer readers a new perspective on Asian culture (mainly Japanese) as something modern and familiar.
