The article concentrates on mapping continuities and changes in the contemporary Estonian school lore about experiences with supernatural beings: main characters, fears, and emotions connected with such supernatural beliefs as well as supernatural protective mechanisms are highlighted. One of the central topics of the article is cultural and linguistic loans (e.g. international newcomers like the Slenderman) and their sources (e.g. films, computer games, narrative folklore). I also investigate the interactions of fantasy and real life, believing and non-believing in schoolchildren’s memorates. The article is mainly based on materials that have been collected from schoolchildren since 1992, but I also draw parallels with traditional older folklore.

The article focuses on the concerns of Czech expectant parents and their subsequent life difficulties. A qualitative longitudinal methodology was used to study parental experiences for a period of around four years. Three waves of semi-structured interviews were conducted with sixteen dual-earner parental couples who had their first child in 2011 or 2012. An analysis of 93 interviews revealed that the fears of the parents-to-be principally concerned childcare, paid work, free time, the relationships, and health. Actual experience of difficulties in these areas was often mentioned by different respondents from those who had expected to have them. The theory of intensive motherhood was employed to underscore the heavy demands and responsibilities placed on contemporary parents and the difficulties that accompany the use of a child-centred approach. The heavy demands on childcare felt by mothers who adhered to the intensive mothering model were cited as causing difficulties in the everyday lives of parental couples; the fathers mainly complained of a lack of rest and quality time with their partners.

Presence of a drawing in human’s life can be observed as far back as in the prehistoric times. Drawing was the primary form of writing thoughts and recording reality. Also today a drawing is a universally available form of expression – simple and helpful in assessing development of child’s personality and in psychological or occupational therapy. Each shape, color and detail plays an important role because they serve as an expression of internal world of feelings, experiences, desires, dreams as well as anxiety and fear which because of some reasons child can have. That is why while analyzing the artistic work of children we are able to see its problems, worries, joys and concerns. The greatest deal of knowledge about child is delivered by the test of drawing of itself thanks to which we get insight into how a child perceives itself. On the other hand, the test of drawing of a family delivers information about relations within the family, the presence of parents and their attitude to a child. With skills of interpretation of artistic works of a child we can see more and we can assess the level of development of a child. We are also able to identify irregularities which could not be observed otherwise. Child’s artistic works also provide information how to stimulate the child’s activity or what should be changed in the educational work.

The materials published come from a number of villages in the Eastern part of the former Lublin Voivodeship. They were collected by the author between 1984 and 1987. The group of interviewees comprised the oldest inhabitants of villages, mostly bilingual natives who knew the Polish and Ukrainian dialects. The theme of the texts are beliefs about the world of demons held by villagers from the Eastern Lublin region. The rusalki [female entities or demons associated with water], żelazne baby/ [sg. železnaâ baba/ an iron lady – a demon], topielice [sg. topielica, a female demon, the soul of a young woman who drowned], and devils are the main characters in these stories. The relationship between some people (or rather their occupation), such as millers or shepherds and the supernatural world is also depicted in the article. The rules of folk morality are expressed in these stories, i.e. there is a punishment after death for bad behaviour. Dancing lights [Pol. ogniki, Lat. ignis fatuus, or will-o’-the-wisp] in the marshes are – according to folk interpretations – the ghost of the geometra [a land surveyor] who measured a field. Stories about the devil who establishes relationships with people very easily (often offering his services to humans or impersonating humans) are the most common. Moreover, in the presented selection, there are stories about the starchy [fears/ scares]. They are believed to be demons or ghosts of close people who died. They inhabit graveyards and can appear in various forms.
