This study analyzes celebrations of presidents’ birthdays in interwar Czechoslovakia. Th e authors discuss the formative role of the holidays within the framework of the construction of Czechoslovak national identity. They focus on new forms of the celebrations and discuss how the earlier pattern of Emperor Francis Joseph Festivities were employed in republican festivities. The authors deal with political negotiations of festival regulations and codes as well as their implementation in practice. Th ey analyze which narratives were employed for the image of the president and the presidency in general. They also illuminate how fi rst Czechoslovak president Tomáš G. Masaryk’s birthday was commemorated after his abdication and particularly after his death, and how the festivity was changed after Edvard Beneš became president.

This text focuses on the issue of the instrumental politicization of history, which is illustrated by the political contexts of the Liberation Festival in Pilsen. The goal of the text is to present the ways in which the (re)production of the myth of freedom takes place over the course of the festival’s celebrations and present the forms that the narrative of this myth assumes. The text is a contribution to the broader debate on the political significance of public events relating to the commemoration of the end of the Second World War in all of Central Europe. In the text, we will show that an official narrative of the myth of freedom exists. Over the course of the celebrations, this myth is (re)produced by local, regional, and national political representatives. In many cases, the official narrative is disrupted by competing narratives, which attempt to redefine or at least weaken the dominant interpretation of the myth of freedom and connected notions of liberation and occupation both in the context of the period of the Second World War and of contemporary politics. We also point out the ways in which the dramaturgical and discursive defense of this dominant narrative takes place on the part of official representatives.

Since the beginning of the 1990s we can observe an increasing number of festivities in the Czech Republic which are constructed after a historical shape of the rural carnival. They reveal the needs and intentions of contemporary urban society that manipulates with elements of the carnival in the context of contemporary activities. We focus on the way the structural units of the festivity are selected and appropriated by people within the construction of its contemporary form. The ethnomusicological and ethnochoreological approach enables us to refl ect the cognitive process of the participants that makes visible their personal as well as collective experience of the festivity and gives us information about social relationships, culture and collective memory produced together with imaginaries of the time. The qualitative field research took place in several districts of Prague and its suburbs based on relationships between place and interests

The present essay does not aim to map in detail the institutional developments within the community of the Viennese Czechs nor does it focus on its social transformation, although it makes use of this broad framework. Its primary focus is on reflections and celebrations of Czechoslovak public holidays and other important days in the Czech-Viennese milieu. One of the central questions is to what extent Czechoslovak festivities resonated spontaneously there, and to what extent the Czechoslovak state contributed to the motivation for these ceremonies as an indoctrination tool.

The article presents the most important festivals of street art in Poland in 2014: the reasons of uprising, distinctive features, the ways of organizing and being held. Festival is shown as typical urban phenomenon, with the character referring to carnival’s parade and with the roots reaching the ancient times. These days, the performances in urban space are becoming a common way of getting to the new viewers, showing heretofore existing kinds of performance in another context – full of immediacy and unpredictability. The materials were collected with usage of the Internet sources and also by ethnographical methods – directly from the participants.

In this article author suggests new possibilities in studying modern festivities based on thorough review of existing literature. His goal is to review and confront three disciplinary discourses that conceptualized social practices related to festive cultures. First, theories of ritual in social and cultural anthropology are analysed and assessed in relation to modern festivities. Second, the concepts of custom and habit used in the European ethnology, especially Central European tradition of Volkskunde (including Czech národopis), are presented and considered for research of modern festivities. Third, historical discourse about modern festivities is presented and theoretical challenges related to the historical perspective are introduced. On these grounds author proposes a conceptual framework based on performance studies that both reflects advantages of former three disciplinary discourses and overcomes their disadvantages. Finally, a set of new and innovative research questions is suggested.

The study deals with modern-day city festivals in three Moravian cities (Jemnice, Brtnice and Jihlava). Those historicizing festivals emphasize specific features of their development and the history of the venue; they are based on self-identification, local pride and specificity. Although their origin reflects different geographic and historical circumstances, they share many common elements (long tradition; particular opportunity – a historical milestone to which the festivity´s development relates; very good support by local inhabitants who are organizers, parade participants and visitors). In the past, the festivals were strongly associated with Christianity. From the mid-20th century, the religious part was suppressed, however, it was at least partially renewed in all three cities after 1989. During the festivals, the cities experience a festive and extraordinary time and space separated from the everyday life. The organizing supports the perception of local identity, and it welds the community together. The residents of the cities feel compelled to organize the festivity. The festivals are important in terms of representation, economics and tourism, which is more and more emphasized. This puts stress on theatrics and rich accompanying programme.

This article focuses on the hitherto rather neglected subject of panegyric works dedicated to the sovereign, Matthias Habsburg. In connection with the key moments in his career — his selection as King and ultimately Emperor, his marriage and coronation — the Czech lands saw the creation of literary works that played a part in the display of his sovereign power and majesty. The growing importance of national languages can be observed in their composition. Initially extensive prose descriptions (reports) were printed in Czech, authored by Jiří Závěta of Závětice. These went on to inspire the Czech songs of Sixtus Palma Močidlanský. Literature written in German is represented in particular by Matthias Hoë of Hoënegg’s homage sermon. Contrasting with the few (and hence important) literary works in national languages there is a large quantity of Latin panegyric prose and poetry presented in a representative selection in this study. Apart from the literary genres that de facto permeate all the languages (reports, sermons, panegyric speeches and poems, songs, prayers and dramas), attention is also paid to the conception of the monarch’s personality in celebratory literature, as well as the form and intention of individual works and the reception of antique literature as an integral part of the celebration of the sovereign power tradition. Almost without exception, the literary works presented had their pragmatic objectives, but higher literary ambitions and more demanding literary stylizations are not abandoned.
