Globalization leaves its footprint on the leisure market contributing to the global popularization of brand new forms of recreation. A perfect example of such instant diffusion of innovation on a global scale is the rapid development of escape rooms. The aim of the article is to try and explain the extraordinary popularity of escape rooms in Poland, mainly through an analysis of what they offer. The author presents the origins and development of this particular form of recreation, discusses the location of nearly 600 facilities functioning in 2016, as well as giving a detailed description of escape rooms in the ten large Polish cities. The study leads to the conclusion that the phenomenon of escape rooms stems from, among other things, the fundamental assumptions of the experience economy.

During five years of extremely rapid and spontaneous development, escape rooms have become a permanent component of Polish urban space. At the same time, this form of recreation has gained a whole community of enthusiasts. The aim of the article is to present a comprehensive description of the people who visit escape rooms in Poland through an online survey including 718 users of lockme.pl, the largest promotional and booking portal in the country. The results have enabled the author to identify the socio-demographic features of the players, sources of information about escape rooms, user motivations, the frequency, character and course of visits, the emotions accompanying the game, as well as general opinions and evaluations of Polish escape rooms.

Allotment gardens are multifunctional elements of urban space, which have been shaped by various strands of development, among which a significant role is played by health purposes and recreational use. Different aspects and problems of the recreational use of allotments in the industrial area of the Katowice conurbation in Silesia, southern Poland are the scope for this analysis, and are considered against the background of their historical development. Allotment gardens are important components of an urban recreation system, and a primary base for recreation by the owners of these allotments. Time spent in gardens is filled with physical activities associated with taking care of them and also for passive recreation. An advantage is the possibility to spend leisure time, especially by hard working people or those with limited possibilities to access other forms of recreation. The date of commencement of work and the number of people spending leisure time on the plots are dependent on weather conditions and being at the disposal of free time. Therefore, recreation is characterized by seasonality, and reveals significant differences in the number of allotment users each day. Socio-economic changes in the last few years have resulted in significant changes in the methods of utilising these gardens and the type of recreational use of individual allotments.

In the global economy based on knowledge it is metropolises that determine the region’s developmental potential. These are the regions of high population density and of diverse levels of life quality. Apart from intrapersonal and interpersonal features it is also environmental factors that impact on the likelihood of someone participating in physical recreation Recognizing characteristic features determining different forms of motor activity, their frequency together with the structure of recreational migrations is crucial in the process of planning and organizing recreational system in cities and metropolises. Therefore, the purpose of the following study is to determine the level of participation in recreational activity of the inhabitants of Poznań metropolis, together with the analysis of selected factors of demographic, social and economic character that have a differentiating effect onto this activity. In the study 1584 inhabitants of Poznań metropolis were examined by 5 professional interviewers between March and June 2016 by means of a standardized questionnaire. The conducted studies proved high diversification of recreational activity of the inhabitants of the Poznań Metropolis and substantiated the directional hypotheses. The obtained results made it possible to identify the groups of inhabitants who participate in recreational activity regularly, seasonally and occasionally. Moreover, the demographic, social and economic variables made it possible to identify a group of inhabitants who are extremely passive or participate in motor recreation very rarely.
