The paper deals with educational activities of the far-right skinhead subculture and the environmental freegan subculture in the public space, set into a frame of public pedagog y. On the basis of ethnographic research of the educational activities of subcultures, the paper describes basic categories of public pedagog y of subcultures, including aims, contents, methods, and target groups. The aims describe what the subcultures want to achieve through their educational activities and are based on the direction of the given subculture. The methods show which educational activities these subcultures use, both in the physical public space and in the media. The target groups reveal the multi-level division of the audiences that the subcultures affect. In the final part, the paper discusses the role of subcultures as unofficial educational agents in the contemporary educational reality.

Celem artykułu jest omówienie dwóch współczesnych subkultur: freegan i straight edge poprzez porównanie ich z subkulturą hipisów. Autorka definiuje termin „subkultura”, wyjaśnia zainteresowanie subkulturami wśród młodzieży oraz przedstawia podobieństwa i różnice między tymi ruchami społecznymi w takich aspektach jak: ideologia, preferowana muzyka, stosunek do używek oraz właściwy im wizerunek. Tekst pokazuje, że choć niniejsze ruchy społeczne są od siebie odległe czasowo, to jednak wiele je łączy. Ponadto artykuł podejmuje refleksję nad kondycją dzisiejszej młodzieży

The aim of this article is to describes two modern subcultures: freegans and the straight edge by comparison to hippie subculture. The author defines the term „subculture”, explains the youth’s interest in subcultures and presents the similarities and differences between the social movements in many aspects, such as ideology, preferred music, attitude to drugs, their image. The text shows that although these subcultures are distant in time, they have a lot in common. Furthermore, the article describes the condition of today’s youth.
