Ochrona różnorodności jest wpisana jako jedna z zasad zrównoważonego rozwoju, ale wydaje się całkowicie niemożliwa i nieuzasadniona w miastach. Pojawia się pytanie, po co chronić przyrodę tam, gdzie jej nie ma. Specyficzny ekosystem miejski wbrew powszechnym opiniom charakteryzuje się dużą różnorodnością biologiczną wynikającą z mozaikowej struktury zbiorowisk, na którą składają się płaty naturalne w rożnym stopniu zmodyfikowane przez człowieka, obszary rolnicze, zieleń nasadzana oraz roślinność synantropijna. Postępująca urbanizacja, porządkowanie terenów dotychczas nieużytkowanych, działania pielęgnacyjne, planistyczne, ale i ochroniarskie wpływają na spadek różnorodności. Niedoceniana jest jej wartość w funkcjonowaniu miast i poprawie warunków życia w miastach, a także jej aspekt ekonomiczny.

Protecting diversity is one of the principles of sustainable development but it seems completely impossible and unreasonable in cities. The question arises why protect the environment where it is not. Specific urban ecosystem, contrary to popular opinion is characterized by a high biodiversity resulting from the mosaic structure of the communities, which consists of patches of natural varying degrees modified by human, agricultural areas, green sheathed and synanthropic vegetation. Increasing urbanization, organize previously idle land, maintenance cost, planning and plant cultivation are affect the decrease diversity. Underestimated is the value in the functioning of cities, improving living conditions in the cities and the economic aspect.

Przedmiotem pracy jest ocena atrakcyjności i potencjału rozwojowego Białej Podlaskiej w świetle opinii studentów kierunków ekonomicznych Państwowej Szkoły Wyższej w Białej Podlaskiej. W części teoretycznej pracy przedstawiono zagadnienie atrakcyjności i potencjału rozwojowego. Część empiryczna jest wynikiem sondażu diagnostycznego przeprowadzonego na zbiorowości 316 studentów. Ocena potencjału rozwojowego i funkcjonowania miasta prowadzona była przez studentów z uwzględnieniem potrzeb młodzieży studiującej, mieszańców, przedsiębiorców i turystów. Badania wykazały, że respondenci dobrze oceniają szanse dla miasta w rozwoju edukacji, handlu i sektora transportu, spedycji i logistyki. Miasto utraciło wcześniej dobrze rozwinięte funkcje przemysłowe.

The study deals with evaluation of the attractiveness and development potential of the City of Biała Podlaska in the opinions of students of economics at the State College in Biała Podlaska. The work contains a theoretical part which presents issues of attractiveness and development potential, as well as an empirical part based on the results of a diagnostic survey carried out among 316 students of the economics major. The assessment of the development potential and functioning of the city was carried out by students, taking into account the needs of young people studying at the College, inhabitants, entrepreneurs and tourists. Research has shown that the respondents were able to rightly assess the chances for the city in the development of education, trade and transport, logistics and shipping. It has also confirmed the fact that the city has lost its well-developed industrial functions.
