Geographic information system (hereinafter GIS) enables space data to save, operate and analyse. Therefore it is primarily defined for branches that are based on dealing with spatially usable data (e.g. cartography, transport, public administration etc.). Nevertheless, GIS has its use in other branches as well – it can be applied in such cases when information of focused phenomenon is operated and when at the same time this phenomenon is connected with specific area (e.g. in archaeology, architecture, preservation of monuments etc.).

In 2011, the National Institute of Folk Culture in Strážnice was charged to solve the project titled Traditional Folk Dress in Moravia; Identification, analysis, preservation and continually sustainable condition of collection material from 1850–1950. Within this task, a plethora of expert outputs of identification or analytic nature came into being. Many of them were presented to the professional and amateur public in the form of expert studies or publications. The information about documented garments could only be made available thanks to the GIS map web Folk Dress in Moravia. The web shall provide the researchers with source information about the folk garments placed in collections of Czech and Moravian museums. Particular types of garments, such as trousers, vests, jackets, coats, shirts, blouses, skirts and women’s waistcoats or bodices etc. will be identified according to united systematics and the acquired information will be placed in a database. It allows to compare the garments and to form a group with identical properties. Based on these properties, particular types and variants thereof are presented on the map. The depicted pictograms of garments allow to move to a database card, in which not only the source information but also drawings and pattern sketches are included.

The Padma river is widely known for its dynamic and disastrous behaviour, and the river has been experiencing intense and frequent bank erosion and deposition leading to the changes and shifting of bank line. In this paper, a time series of Landsat satellite imagery MSS, TM and OLI and TIRS images and are used to detect river bank erosion-accretion and bank line shifting during the study period 1975-2015. This study exhibits a drastic increase of erosion and accretion of land along the Padma river. The results show that from 1975 to 2015, the total amount of river bank erosion is 49,951 ha of land, at a rate of 1,249 ha a−1 and the total amount of accretion is 83,333 ha of land, at a rate of 2,083 ha a−1. Throughout the monitoring period, erosion-accretion was more pronounced in the right part of the river and bank line had been shifting towards the southern direction. The paper also reveals that the total area of islands had been increased significantly, in 2015 there was about 50,967 ha of island area increased from 20,533 ha of island area in 1975, and the results evidence consistency of sedimentation in the river bed.

The text focuses on the possibilities offered by a spatial perspective for the study, teaching, and sharing of experiences with state socialism. The authors offer an insight into the concept developed during the creation of an interactive map. The map aims to visualize the Communist Party’s attempt to interpret Czechoslovak history in the public environment. The relics of its cultural policy in the current public sphere present opportunities for the use of the map in education.

The paper aims at the presence of North-East Czech dialectal elements – and, more narrowly, those of the Giant Mountains Foreland (Podkrkonoší) area – in the contemporary toponymy in the cadaster of the town Vysoké nad Jizerou. The author analyses both folk (“living”), and standardized toponyms and their mutual relation, and comes to the conclusion that contemporary toponymy employs dialectal means especially of the morphological, word-forming and lexical sort, whereas the phonetic elements of the Giant Mountains Foreland dialect are gradually disappearing. To the end of the paper, the author also suggests the ways of effective linking toponomastic research and the presentation of its results with the methods and tools of geographic information system.
