This article presents tribal gords in the West Slavic Territory. The analysis was performed on the lower Parsęta basin and selected regions in Poland (chiefly Wielkopolska, Małopolska and Mazowsze). Considerable attention was paid to the origin of the gords, their function and role at a time preceding establishment of the early medieval state structures.

Many years of excavation works in the gord in Międzyrzecz have resulted in discovering the remains of three small glass workshops from the second half of the 10th century, the second half of the 11th century and the 13th century. The scarce and typically scattered sources have made it possible to identify the workshops’ nature and, to a very limited extent, the products manufactured there. The discovery included pieces of large and small crucibles, waste from the preliminary stage of glass melting. Most probably, low-alkaline potassium glass was produced there

In the late medieval settlement layers of the gord in Międzyrzecz, a small collection of glass vessels was excavated. Several forms of tableware were reconstructed and research was conducted into the chemical composition of the glass. The examined piece of a vessel and the glass is potassium glass which comes in two varieties: calcium-potassium-magnesium-silica (CaO-K2O-MgO-SiO2) and calcium-potassium-magnesium-aluminium-silica (CaO-K2O-MgO-Al.2O3-SiO2). The forms of the vessels and the chemical composition of the examined glass indicate the basic goods manufactured in Central Europe.

In the gord in Kruszwica, on the settlement level from the 4th quarter of the 11th century, a piece of a large bead was discovered. It was made of black and purple glass, decorated with a set glass thread and small buttons with the (floral) millefiori ornament. It was made of glass, the “ash” variety of the Na2O-K2O-CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 type (the grains) and the Na2O-K2O-CaO-MgO-Al2O3-PbO-SiO2 type (the ornament). An interpretation of the results of an analysis of the chemical content of the glass (XRF, X-Ray Fluorescence) has allowed to define the probable place of the glass production, as well as the form and type of this rare specimen, namely the Middle East (probably Byzantine) workshops.

The article presents the transformation of stronghold in Poland in the 12th and 13th centuries. By providing the examples of Kruszwica (Kuyavia) and Ląd (Wielkopolska), attention has been drawn to the fact that, despite the collapse of the strongholds around which gords were once organised, they could continue development and remain political, societal, religious, economic and cultural centres. They allow historians to take a different view of the operations of the then territorial and administrative organisation in Poland as well as the gradual disintegration of the system.

The partially destroyed gord in Rogoźno has not been well explored archaeologically. The only excavations at the site were conducted by J. Delekta in the beginning of the 30s of the previous century. They had an interventional character and were conducted due to the washing of the south-east part of the gord together with the dyke during river Wełna engineering, where the gord had been built. Research was principally limited to the description of the occurrent destruction, with a very sketchy description of the exposed cultural layers, as well as to collecting a small set of moveable sources. On the basis of the collected pieces of pottery, J. Delekta assumed that the gord had been created before the 10th century. A similar chronology (phase C of the early Middle Ages) was assumed for the gord in Rogoźno in the post-war studies, and in the recent ones – phase D0 of the early Middle Ages. In the last quarter of 2019, when an electrical wire was being laid down in the close vicinity to the gord, 4 oaken beams were excavated from the construction of the dyke ruined before war (including 2 with characteristic “hooks”). From these beams, samples were taken in order to date them with the use of dendrochronological methods. The analysis revealed that the beams were obtained after the year 900, most probably in 914, which was indicated by one of the samples with yearly dating. It should be therefore assumed that the construction of the stronghold and its further functioning should be connected with the beginnings of the formation of the state of the first Piasts. This process began around the year 900 and continued until the middle of the 19th century within the Gniezno region and its adjoining areas, hence also in the Rogoźno region.
