The paper discusses problems which stem from the following question: what is the goal of grammatical research of a certain language? Three main problems are uncovered: (1) the “grammatical system” is a theoretically bounded construct, (2) various approaches differ in what they account for and what they leave out of the description and (3) certain research methods are often cannot be directly linked to a particular theoretical framework, which is related to the problem of the “conversion rules” between the results and the theory and may also lead to a change in the framework under the influence of the method. Based on these problems, three questions are raised: (1) what is the best solution to these problems (provided there is one), (2) are these problems principal or temporary and (3) do we really need to look for a solution to these problems while doing grammatical research. The paper tries to find an answer to these questions and argues that the current diversity of approaches and aims in the research of language and its use is universally beneficial.

The paper addresses the so-called discontinuous reciprocal constructions in Czech and their description in grammar and lexicon, as recently discussed by J. Pergler. Two ways of treating discontinuous constructions are introduced: (i) to handle these constructions in the grammar as one type of constructions of non-reflexive verbs, and (ii) to capture them in the lexicon as constructions of derived reflexive verbs. The advantages and disadvantages of both these approaches are carefully considered with the conclusion that the latter approach is more advantageous as it complies with the fact that discontinuous constructions are – with respect to the lexicon-grammar continuum – rather at the lexical end.

When language units are analysed the relation between the form and meaning is investigated. Looking at quality of the relation, linguists study if, and possibly also how, the semantic component is reflected in the formal realization. The relation between the form and meaning is arbitrary and conventional. Focusing on the quantitative aspect of relation between form and meaning, the ratio of a form to the number of its meanings is studied. One form may have several meanings. Some forms have the same or similar meaning, however they usually differ in frequency of use, style or there is a subtle semantic variation. There are two approaches: semasiological (which is predominant in description of Czech for foreigners) and onomasiological which offers new possibilities for the description of Czech grammar system.

This grammaticographic study deals with the communicative function of sentences and modality from a Czech-German contrastive perspective. The object under scrutiny is František Štícha’s CzechGerman Contrastive Grammar (2nd edition, 2015), one of the milestones of Czech-German contrastive linguistic analysis. The study focuses mainly on greeting formulas, modi, modal verbs, modal words and modal particles. It adresses the question as to how deficiences identified in the description of these phenomena in Czech-German Contrastive Grammar could be remedied. Crucially, special attention is devoted to the user aspect.

The article analyses the influence of Vladimír Šmilauer on the character of the Journal of Modern Philology (Časopis pro moderní filologii, ČMF). Šmilauer was associated with the Journal for Modern Philology as an author and an editor for Slavic studies (1939–1951). The article describes the main linguistic/philological topics contributed to the magazine by Šmilauer (Slovak studies and the history of the Slovak language, new Czech, e.g. orthography, reports on foreign literature, etc.). The period of Šmilauer’s work at the ČMF falls into a time of socially problematical political systems: the Nazi protectorate after 1939 and the communist terror after 1948. On the example of the case of Šmilauer, we will show how and when political systems were directly reflected in the philological content of the Journal for Modern Philology.
