The article attempts to employ distribution analysis of Proto-Slavonic sounds to falsify current findings on the Proto-Slavonic stock of vowel phonemes. The material for the analysis has been extracted from W. Boryś’s Słownik etymologiczny języka polskiego (‘Etymological dictionary of Polish’). Analyzed was direct bilateral neighbourhood of vowels. To determine the Proto-Slavonic phonological units, a modified methodological proposition of Jerzy Bańczerowski has been used. In light of the analysis, the vowels [i], [y], [ъ], and [ь] – which have until now been treated as separate phonological units – are realizations of two phonemes: /i/ which covers non-back high vowels (→ [i], [y]), and /ъ/ which covers lowered non-back vowels (→ [ъ] and [ь]).

The paper contains new etymological entries to Berber lexical roots and is part of a long-range series eventually resulting, when completed, in materials for an etymological dictionary of Berber, a desired addition to the fascicles of the comparative dictionary of Berber roots (DRB).

The paper is a new contribution to revealing the Afro-Asiatic heritage in the lexical root stock of the Dangla-Migama group of Chadic languages by means of inter-branch comparison primarily using, among others, the ancient Egypto-Semitic etymological evidence.

Diftongizace ý > ej u českých oikonym

The paper is focused on territorial spread of the ý > ej diphthongisation as a specific phonetic phenomenon of the Czech language. The analysis is based on old oikonyms excerpted from two main Czech toponomastic lexicons. The research shows that 1) the earliest orthographic evidence for the ý diphthongisation appears in the thirteenth century, nevertheless some cases are uncertain as they may reflect German pronunciation (oikonyms as Tejn, Tejnec); 2) since the sixteenth century, ej (or monophthongised é) has occurred in oikonyms in historic Bohemia and western and central Moravia, other regions (most of Moravia and Silesia) have preserved oikonymic forms with the etymological ý; 3) a rare evidence for the ej in eastern Moravia and Silesia indicates that in earlier periods of the language development, the ej was a part of cultural language; 4) the first evidence for the diphthongisation of the „soft“ í has been registered since the sixteenth century and it is limited to a small number of oikonyms; 5) the diphthongisation has been based on intralingual causes of the Czech language, it is not a result of imitation of the German language development.

The Halcnovian ethnolect is an old dialect of the Bielsko-Biała's language island, no more used in the everyday communication. There are few written documents which refer to his origin, so it is not known well. In this situation the linguistics, and especially the phonology, can help to find out the land of origin of the Halcnovian settlers. In this paper the author try to analyse the phonologic system of the ethnolect in comparison to the historic phonology of the German language that it derives from. The reference level is first of all the Middle High German (in addition, less taken into consideration, the Old High German and the Early New High German), because, how it results from the analysis, it was the last common stage of evolution. The outcome of the study doesn't contradict the information indicated in the few written documents – the ethnolect has probably emerged from the East Central dialects in the 14th-15th century.

This paper deals with the origin and meaning of the toponyms Tivat and T(h)eodo, as well as the problem of their demarcation. The hypotheses about the origin of toponym Tivat presented before this article are considered completely unsatisfactory. In this study, it is assumed that the toponym Tivat might have been derived from the (ancient) Greek lexeme τῑφώδης/τειφώδης (tiphōdēs/teiphōdēs) ‘swampy’. This hypothesis is based on the existence of swampy land near the sea coast within Tivat municipality, especially in the region called Solila. Although this is not a completely flawless theory in view of some phonological elements, i.e. some small irregularities in phonetic development τειφώδης > Tivat, it can be accepted at least as a form of a very probable hypothesis, particularly because of the archaeological evidence: ancient Greek pottery dated back to the 5th century BC found on the territory of Tivat municipality, in the swampy Solila region. The toponym T(h)eodo originated more likely as a hypocoristic of the Greek personal name Θεόδωρος, i.e. Latin version of the name Theodorus. Sanctus Theodorus was primarily a name of a monastery on the territory of contemporary Tivat municipality; hypocoristic of name T(h)eodorus – T(h)eodo later became a (micro)toponym for the area around that monastery.
