In 1924, Andrzej Gawroński, a professor at the John Casimir University, a linguist, and an Indian philologist, postulated the creation of a scientific society for linguistics. The project was accepted by the then few circles of Polish linguists, and steps have been taken toward its realization. On 31st May 1925, the founding meeting was held in Lviv and formally brought to life the Polish Linguistic Society. Based on the vestigial extant sources, this paper presents, to what degree it is possible, this episode in the history of Polish linguistics.

Henryk Ułaszyn (1874–1956), linguist, specialist in Slavic and Polish languages and literatures, disciple of Baudouin de Courtenay and a professor of Poznań University, was not only a scholar but also a prominent social activist and freethinker of the interwar period. His liberal and anticlerical views, overtly expressed in public talks and lectures, the articles published in the press and in pamphlets, as well as his uncompromising and hard hitting polemics in his public addresses in defence of science and reason, led ultimately to a number of conflicts with the local academic community. Ułaszyn was attacked by Catholic and right-wing press, he was even physically assaulted. The article, researched and based on archival material, focuses on this particular aspect in his biography.

Towarzystwo Miłośników Języka Polskiego (‘Society of Friends of the Polish Language’) is the oldest such society and greatly distinguished for the popularization of knowledge about the language, and also for the knowledge about Polish itself. The few publications devoted to it, written mostly on the occasion of anniversaries, tend to overlook the figure of Andrzej Gawroński (1885–1927), an outstanding expert in Sanskrit, a linguist, and a professor of the Lviv University, despite the fact that archive materials show that he played a very significant role in the creation of the Society, and even penned the preliminary version of its charter. This paper presents Gawroński’s part in the forming of TMJP; it is based on extant letters from A. Gawroński to Kazimierz Nitsch from years 1919–1921 (Archive of Science of PAN and PAU in Cracow), letters from K. Nitsch to linguists Henryk Ułaszyn and Antonina Obrębska-Jabłońska, and also on the few printed materials from years 1918–1927.

This article deals with the reception of Saussure's thought in Poland. Its primary goal is to do justice to the researchers who have contributed to the promotion of Saussure’s ideas in Polish linguistics in the sixties and seventies (of the last century), as well as to draw attention to misunderstandings that have arisen around the Course in General Linguistics among Polish linguists. The paper consists of two main parts. The first part presents the supporters of the theory, namely Jerzy Kuryłowicz, Leon Zawadowski, Adam Heinz and Andrzej Bogusławski, and the second part its most ardent opponents, that is to say Witold Doroszewski and Witold Mańczak. The author’s attempt is to refute their main objections.

The Józef Mianowski Fund was a private institution that had systematically supported Polish scholars and their research since , in the period when a Polish state did not exist. In , it announced a questionnaire to determine, in the new political situation, the state and needs of various scientic disciplines studied in Poland and by Polish scholars in Europe. Collected from the answers of scholars representing various disciplines, the results were meant to help direct the actions of the Fund in the country reborn aer a period of partition. The paper presents the views of linguists Jan Rozwadowski, Kazimierz Nitsch, Stanisław Szober, and Aleksander Brückner, on the state of Polish linguistics of the time, and their proposals for research projects, needs in the area of scientic literature, organizational actions, and education of linguists and popularization of linguistics. Their articles show a realistic evaluation of the state of Polish linguistic science, and very clearly specied plans aimed at raising Polish linguistics to the European level.

Bańkowski’s review of the first edition of Linde’s Dictionary (1807–1814) and the emendations and supplements introduced by the editors of the second edition of the work (1854–1860) was less than glowing (e.g. “clearly unfinished, prematurely printed”). These opinions need to be firmly rejected. Bańkowski’s nearly 330 statements inserted in the entries of his etymological dictionary contain mostly or at least partially valid observations concerning Linde’s Dictionary. Linde’s lexicographic work did, in fact, represent an important reading source for Mickiewicz. However, Bańkowski’s opinion that it had a decisive influence on the poet’s linguistic development cannot be corroborated.

Artykuł przestawia dorobek polskiego słowotwórstwa w latach 1989–2014. Nadrzędnym kryterium opisu jest charakter materiału językowego poddawanego analizie, dlatego też osobno omówiono dokonania słowotwórstwa synchronicznego i diachronicznego. Dodatkowe kryterium stanowią metody i narzędzia badawcze (słowotwórstwo strukturalistyczne, kognitywne, pragmatyczne, korpusowe). W artykule podkreślone zostały też związki badań derywatologicznych z leksykologicznymi.

The paper presents the heritage of Polish word formation in the period of 1989–2014. The key criterion of description is the character of the linguistic material subjected to analysis. For this reason the achievements of synchronic and diachronic word formation are described separately. An additional criterion is the method and tools used in the research (structural word formation, cognitive word formation, pragmatic word formation). The paper also emphasizes the relations between derivational and lexicological research.

Profesor Marian Kucała jako dialektolog

EN
The paper presents Marian Kucała’s dialectological work in the chronological order. Particular attention has been given to his greatest dialectological achievement, the Porównawczy słownik trzech wsi małopolskich (1957; ‘A comparative dictionary of three villages in Lesser Poland’), emphasizing its superior cognitive and methodological qualities. While discussing Kucała’s various articles, we indicate his originality and ingenuity. Some of his papers refer to linguistic phenomena from his native village of Więciórka, while others cover the whole of the Polish dialectal area. One work that distinguishes itself among them, is the popular title Twoja mowa cię zdradza (1994a, 2002a; ‘Your speech betrays you’) in which Kucała presents to the unqualified reader the most important of Polish dialectal phenomena in an interesting and easy to understand way. While discussing Professor M. Kucała’s dialectological work, one should constantly bear in mind that these rich, diversified and grand achievements constitute only a part of his oeuvre which simultaneously includes works on the history of Polish and the contemporary Polish literary language.
