Artykuł dokonuje przeglądu i analizy porównawczej głównych sposobów użycia metafor w przemówieniach programowych premierów Polski i Francji na przełomie XX i XXI wieku. Przy przyjęciu klasycznego rozumienia metafory, według którego termin ten oznacza przeniesienie nazwy jednej rzeczy na inną i przy założeniu, że ta fi gura jest powszechnym narzędziem poznawczym funkcjonującym w języku, przedstawiono dominujące wzorce metaforyki w tekstach exposé. Wykazano pewne podobieństwa wynikające z retorycznego charakteru języka polityki, a także szereg różnic w przypadku metaforyki korpusu francusko- i polskojęzycznego. Ustalono, że sprawą metafory następuje hybrydyzacja gatunków przemówień politycznych w tekstach polskich exposé, w których funkcja perswazyjna przesłania funkcję poznawczą i estetyczną, która z kolei dominuje w korpusie francuskojęzycznym.

This article is a comparative analysis of the main trends in the use of metaphor in Polish and French Prime Ministers’ inauguration addresses at the turn of the twenty-fi rst century. It follows a classical conception of metaphor understood as a transfer of a name from one entity to another, and an assumption that metaphor is pervasive in everyday language use, including political discourse. The analysis of inauguration addresses has revealed some pervasive patterns in metaphors across both samples, but also some specifi c features of the Polish texts. It demonstrates that in the Polish addresses metaphors instantiate a hybrid functionality with the persuasive aspect overriding both the cognitive and aesthetic aspects of metaphor application. In the French sample, the aesthetic aspect seems to be dominant.
