The text considers two metaphors describing creative freedom in modern society: secretiveness and shadow. In the shadow, creative individuals protect themselves against the ubiquitous need to explain and screen life. The text proves that contemporary literature (Sebald, Quinard) and essay (Vuarnet, Maffesoli) search inspiration in secretiveness and shadow while at the same time they see a threat to art in the mechanism of explanation.

The liberalism as doctrine was never deep-rooted in the political sphere in Poland. It wasn’t possible on account of historical conditioning, but also the tradition constituting the crucial element of the political culture. Hence in principle to the turn of years 80. and 90. Of the 20th century in Poland political groups identifying themselves with liberal values didn’t function. However it doesn’t mean that liberal ideas weren’t generally speaking current in the social awareness. It will be sufficient because to point to two discussed values, i.e. the freedom and the right to hold the individual property in order to dispel all concerning doubts (enough poorly consolidated institutionally) of liberalism to the society. Of course to mark he belongs, that it isn’t regarding the society as a whole, as well as isn’t regarding the liberalism in all spheres of the activity of individuals. Because in the economic sphere the freedom is acceptable to a larger extent, than in the cultural sphere.

In her novel, Juli Zeh paints the picture of a perfect world from which disease and suffering have been almost entirely eliminated and in which health becomes the overarching value. That would truly be a perfect world, wholly subordinated t the state and the dictates of health, were it not for the disobedient individuals breaking out of the system. One of such rebels and enemies of the state is the main character, Mia Holl. She becomes a symbol of freedom and independence, a personification of the right to illness, dirt and germs. In a sterile world an individual’s freedom and right of self-determination present a danger to the state’s apparatus – a totalitarian system in which nothing matters but the dictate of health.

In this article the specific of interpretation of freedom as «freedom of choice» in the works of medieval scriber of Kyivan Rus metropolitan Ilarion. The assertion of own confessional identity, particular confessional nationalism by author is interpreted like higher representation of freedom of will. It is underlined that freedom idea in Ilarion has some aspects: state freedom, church freedom, religious freedom and personal freedom. Every aspect is realized according to outlook of author and epoch. It is accented that medieval symbolism combined objective distinctness, social dominated under individual. That is why the first was necessity of social, state and church freedom, than – individual, personal, which meant acceptance of Christianity at that time. In philosophy of ancient thinker Plato the harmony was created by Mind, Courage and Reasonableness, but in philosophy of Ilarion the harmony consists of Grace, Freedom of will and Conscience. It was a great step towards the medieval philosophy of Europe. And it was done by Ilarion – the Ruthenian thinker. Byzantium tradition the population of Christianity interpreted as Greek deal, but Ilarion underlined the importance of personal decision of Volodymyr. The work by Ilarion represents the realization of freedom of volition and freedom of choice in the Medieval epoch.

Tuberculosis remains a significant cause of human suffering and death in the twenty-first century and represents a relevant public health problem. The article analyzes how the conflict between individual freedom and public health is related to tuberculosis treatment and how they are perceived and managed by the professionals and contacts involved in the process. This is qualitative research, in which semi-structured interviews were conducted with contacts of tuberculosis patients, as well as health professionals from the Epidemiological Surveillance and Family Health Strategy, involved in Tuberculosis Control in the city of Araçuaí, MG.The data analysis verifies the tension between individual freedom and public health, showing that the discontinuity of treatment is related to two political senses of freedom. While in the negative sense the person is considered free when no person or group interferes with his actions, in the positive sense freedom is understood as the self-determination of the individual. Therefore, considering the risks that freedom in the decision not to adhere to treatment (positive sense) may bring to the community, the conception of negative freedom applied by the Brazilian health system is based on interference, requiring conduct and strategies in these cases.

Reflection on human freedom will remain a constant motive for reflection in moral theology. Without freedom, there is no human act, so there is no morality in the strict sense of the term “freedom”. That is why it is worth returning to the issue of freedom, but taking into account new ways of understanding it. Freedom will remain a current problem in the struggle of man for good, especially in social life. For Christian thought on this subject, the encyclical of John Paul II Veritatis splendor will remain relevant – read it again.
