The article is aimed at presenting selected mechanisms of managing the economy in the European Union as well as tracing its major tendencies taking place under the influence of the economic crisis (2008 – 2010). The author focuses especially on the issue of the effectiveness of management in the European Union. Moreover, he presents the results of the proposed changes for the peripheral countries in the East-Central Europe.
