This article draws on qualitative data of U.S. high school students considering their place in the adult world; the purpose is to investigate Jeffrey Arnett’s (2000) concept of “emerging adulthood” as a new stage of life course. Drawing on interviews and observational data collected around the time when Arnett’s notion of emerging adulthood started to take hold, I use intersectional interpretive lens in order to highlight how race and gender construct emerging adulthood as high school students move out of adolescence. I consider Arnett’s thesis twofold. First, when emerging adulthood is examined intersectionally, young people reveal that – rather than being distinct periods that can simply be prolonged, delayed, or even reached – life stages are fluid and constantly in flux. Second, since efforts to mitigate against uncertain futures characterizes the Millennial generation, I argue that the process of guarding against uncertainty reorders, questions or reconfigures the characteristics and stages that conventionally serve as markers of life course. I conclude that the identity exploration, indecision, and insecurity associated with emerging adulthood can also be understood as related to how the youth reveal and reshape the life course intersectionally.

W artykule autorka podejmuje problematykę połączenia perspektywy queer z analizą intersekcjonalną poprzez podkreślenie konieczności włączenia do studiów nad seksualnością wymiaru społeczno-ekonomicznego.

The author underlines the necessity of connecting queer perspectives with intersectional analysis through bringing the social-economic dimension into sexuality studies. In the first two sections entitled, Queer perspective and intersectionality and Class and sexuality, respectively she presents critical readings of both perspectives drawing on the analyses from Steven Seidman and Rosemary Hennessy, among others. In the third section she includes a discussion of the concept of metronormativity and presents the results of research on the social situation of lesbians living in rural areas of Poland (on the basis of a study done within the project „Invisible (to) societies”).

The article discusses the multiple discrimination, normalization and stigmatization experienced by deaf LGBT youth in Sicily, Italy, on the basis of a study of their everyday life (specifically school years and peer interactions). So far in Italy, very little attention has been paid to multiple discrimination and, specifically, to homophobic violence towards disabled individuals. It is, therefore, impossible to consider any valid sampling of the desired population and very few reports have been produced. The authors, a sociologist and a psychologist, carry out an analysis of the results obtained from interviews with 15 LGBT individuals recruited through social networks, thematic chats, and associations. This preliminary analysis aims at identifying the key arguments which could form the basis for future strategic inclusion programs and further research projects.

Dotychczas we Włoszech poświęcano niewiele uwagi problemowi wielorakiej dyskryminacji, a w szczególności homofobicznej przemocy wobec osób niepełnosprawnych. Niemożliwe jest tym samym by uwzględnić tu trafny i rzetelny dobór próby tejże populacji. Autorzy tekstu - socjolog i psycholog - analizują wyniki wywiadów z piętnastoma osobami LGBT zwerbowanymi poprzez media społecznościowe, czaty tematyczne i stowarzyszenia. Celem tej wstępnej analizy jest wyodrębnienie kluczowych argumentów, które mogłyby służyć jako podstawa strategicznych programów na rzecz włączenia społecznego i dalszych badań.

Sociology of classes of Michele Lamont, which was developed in a dialogue with Pierre Bourdeu’s theory of classes, is a separate and original proposal of studies on classes. It is to be based on analyses of group identification articulation that are used by actors for self-defining, but at the same time also imply the process of defining and drawing symbolic boundaries between classes. However, these boundaries tend to differ from the boundaries defined in the analyses of economic resources and the social and demographic diversity. Lamont creates and develops her theory against two major challenges that theories of classes face: international comparisons which would focus on cultural distinctions and avoid methodological nationalism, similarly to Bourdieu’s theory. The second challenge would be the forms of social diversity, which are not likely to occur in class analyses, such as racial or gender diversity, and seem to be essential to understand contemporary diversity of societies.
