The author draws attention to the complexity of motherhood as one of the themes depictedin the dramatic works of Wojciech Kossak’s older daughter. Considered a moderate feminist in theinterwar period, Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska is aware of the fact that having children has becomea public matter. It is in the interest of the family, the species and society in general. For this reason, legal regulations are likely to create oppressive situations in which women’s interests and rightsare dismissed. In Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska’s plays, the topic of motherhood appears in a varietyof circumstances, and the news about pregnancy often transforms into a touchstone situation, sparkinga debate on the rights and obligations of an individual towards the human species and theirfamily. Abortion is one of the possible solutions. Yet, while criticising the system of norms andimperatives evolved around the instinct of having children, the playwright focuses on the positiveimages of motherhood. Good mothers are happy, while bad mothers are condemned. Therefore, while granting the heroines of her plays the right to love and personal fulfilment, Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewskaremains a traditionalist when it comes to obligations towards a conceived child.

Maria Morozowicz-Szczepkowska was a Polish actress and a playwright who wrote mostly in the interwar period of 1918-1939. The main area of her concern consisted of women's issues. Being sensitive to social injustice, she courageously spoke out against the gender roles imposed by society. I also write about the controversial stage interpretations of Szczepkowska, particularly about the idea of the “new woman”, and the then referred to proposals of the pre-war feminist movements. The paper is based on my monographic thesis defended in 2013 at the Faculty of Philology, University of Wroclaw.

Gałązka rozmarynu [Rosemary Twig] is a popular art. The article attempts to identify the distinctive features of this type of writing with the aim of positioning it against an earlier literary tradition. In the drama two trends are shown: on the one hand – building a legend of Brigadier Piłsudski and legionary community; on the other – depriving people of heroic qualities: portraying a biological perspective of war participants.

Gałązka rozmarynu jest sztuką popularną. W artykule podjęto próbę określenia cech dystynktywnych tego typu pisarstwa, usytuowania go względem tradycji literackiej. W dramacie zaznaczają się dwie tendencje: z jednej strony budowanie legendy Brygadiera Piłsudskiego i legionowej społeczności, z drugiej – deheroizacja, ukazywanie biologicznej perspektywy uczestników wojny.
