The documents of the Church devote a lot of space to marriage and family. They show marriage and family as natural communities that cannot be substituted by any other institutions. They also point to the necessity of the Christian formation of all the subjects of Church life, among which the first place is taken by family. Introduction into the full Christian life of children, young people and adults is done during the family catechesis. It is a contingent, immediate and practical teaching of religious truths in the family home. This task is first of all the parents’ responsibility; in this way they pass the exam in their religious education and educational skills. Grandparents, elder siblings, as well as the school and the parish help the parents. Family catechesis also effects the preparation for marital and family life. It is a way to revive families for Christian life, to look properly at the preparation to marriage, to live in sanctity and to fulfill the marital and family duties conscientiously.

Kościół, jak i sama rodzina, współcześnie coraz lepiej odkrywają prawdę o tym, że to właśnie rodzina, jako domowy Kościół, jest nie tylko przedmiotem, ale i podmiotem wychowania i katechezy. Mówi się więc już coraz wyraźniej o rodzinnej katechezie, uświadamiając sobie coraz lepiej sprawę, że to właśnie rodzice są pierwszymi wychowawcami i katechetami swoich dzieci. Dysponują oni sobie właściwymi środkami do tego stopnia, że wychowanie i katecheza domowa wcale nie muszą kopiować katechezy parafialnej. Podstawowym jej czynnikiem jest atmosfera szczerości i zaufania oraz świadectwo wiary dawane każdego dnia. Rola rodziców w tej dziedzinie jest niezastąpiona. Dlatego z tych między innymi powodów w niniejszym artykule zostało podjęte zagadnienie dzieła wychowania, które dokonuje się w podstawowym środowisku wychowawczym, jakim jest rodzina. Najpierw po zaprezentowaniu dzisiejszych wyzwań stojących przed rodziną zostało przedstawione odniesienie do katechumenatu rodzinnego, a następnie omówione wychowanie dokonujące się w rodzinie. Całość została ukazana w perspektywie historycznej.
