Artykuł jest próbą pokazania nowoczesnego rozumienia poradnictwa zawodowego jako ważnego instrumentu wspierającego rozwój osobowy, zawodowy i społeczny jednostki poprzez promowanie wszelkich form proaktywnościowych i samorealizacyjnych w ciągu całego życia. Wskazuje na obszary kompetencji doradcy zawodowego w odniesieniu do standardów europejskich i ich wpływu na kształtowanie człowieka samodzielnego. Przedstawione obszary stały się podstawą do wyznaczenia nowego bilansu kompetencji doradcy. Artykuł jest doniesieniem z badań nad specyfiką i warsztatem pracy doradcy zawodowego realizującego swoje funkcje i zadania w strukturach publicznych służb zatrudnienia.

The article makes an attempt at showing modern understanding of career counselling as an important tool supporting personal, professional and social development of an individual through promotion of any pro-active and self-fulfilling forms throughout the life. It shows the competences areas of a career counsellor in relation to European standards and their influence on shaping an independent person. The presented areas have become a basis for establishing a new study of counsellor’s competences. This article is also a source of information on the research devoted to the specific nature and tools of the career counsellor’s job within the public employment services.

Selected aspects related to the roles and competencies of education and career counselors have been presented with respect to the definitions outlined in the European guidelines. A review of selected legal regulations has been included with respect to guidance services, particularly in the school environment. Selected outcomes of education and career guidance have been mentioned. A part of the article is focused on counselor’s competencies. Selected scientific theories stand as a basis of both competencies and the role of a counselor presented in the article.
