The subject of the article is the concept of collective memory, considered through the prism of ‘lived history’ – appearing in two forms: ‘lived in the actual and objective sense’ and ‘experienced in the content sense’ – and ‘objectified history’. By taking under consideration Polish controversies around Jan Tomasz Gross’ books: Neighbors: The Destruction of the Jewish Community in Jedwabne (Polish ed. 2000) and Fear: Anti-Semitism in Poland After Auschwitz (Polish ed. 2008), the author questions the idea of uniform collective memory and its normative claims. Collective memory and the dominant historical narrative is often subject to political manipulation as a means to affirm social unity by occluding of excluding others’ memories. The memory of the past is in fact usually divided among different social and ethnic groups that never formed a coherent community. There is little possibility to conciliate these opposite memories; the only possible way is to confront and negotiate these discrepant views, to work in the direction of democratization of memory.

Przedmiotem artykułu jest pojęcie pamięci zbiorowej, rozpatrywanej przez pryzmat ‘historii przeżytej’ – występującej w dwu postaciach: ‘przeżytej w sensie przedmiotowym’ i ‘przeżytej w sensie treściowym’ – oraz ‘historii zobiektywizowanej’. Uwzględniając polskie kontrowersje wokół książek Jana Tomasza Grossa: Sąsiedzi. Historia zagłady żydowskiego miasteczka (wyd. polskie 2000) i Strach. Antysemityzm w Polsce tuż po wojnie (wyd. polskie 2008), autor kwestionuje pojęcie jednolitej pamięci zbiorowej i jej normatywne roszczenia. Pamięć kolektywna i dominująca narracja historyczna są często przedmiotem manipulacji politycznych jako sposobu na potwierdzenie jedności społecznej poprzez wykluczenie cudzych wspomnień. Pamięć o przeszłości jest w rzeczywistości podzielona między różne grupy społeczne i etniczne, które nigdy nie tworzyły spójnej jedności. Nie ma możliwości pogodzenia tych przeciwnych wspomnień; jedynym możliwym sposobem nadania pamięci zbiorowej kształtu pożądanego w porządku demokratycznym jest konfrontacja i negocjowanie tych rozbieżnych poglądów, czyli dokonywanie ‘transakcji dialogicznych’.

The dispute over the Ottoman heritage and its influence on the identity and evolution of the Albanian nation is one of the fundamental tendencies in the identity discussions in post-communist Albania. The European aspirations of the Albanians encouraged the victimization of identity discourse and promoted seeing contemporary Albanian problems in the context of the collapse of Ottoman Empire. Demands to revise history proposed by of the Democratic Party of Albania after 2009 elections fostered the reinforcement of the mythologized vision of history but also lead to the conflict of the memory of Albania and Turkey, whose policies of memory form part of the current political needs of both countries
