It is commonly believed, and it also seems to be the message of scientific literature, that trees make the main element of greenery in cities. This results from their actual predominance in the city landscape, as well as from the exceptional legal protection that trees have. However, the other components of greenery are equally important – which together with trees make the natural environment of cities, created and shaped by humans. The article is based on publicly available materials, pronouncements on the results of NIK’s audits, media information and responses to the survey that was distributed in the largest Polish cities. The author presents the rules for mowing lawns in selected cities, as well as their impact on greenery, the aesthetic qualities of cities, and their relation to sustainable development and improvement of the living quality at the time of climate changes.

W powszechnej świadomości, ale także w opracowaniach naukowych podstawowym elementem zieleni miejskiej są drzewa. Wpływa na to ich faktyczna dominacja w krajobrazie oraz szczególna ochrona prawna, jaką są otaczane. Jednak nie mniej ważne są pozostałe składniki przyrody, które razem z drzewami stanowią zieleń miejską, czyli najistotniejszą, kształtowaną bezpośrednio przez człowieka część środowiska przyrodniczego w miastach. Korzystając z dokumentów publicznych, informacji o wynikach kontroli NIK, doniesień medialnych oraz odpowiedzi na ankietę skierowaną do głównych polskich metropolii, autor przybliża zasady koszenia trawy w wybranych miastach i wpływ tych zabiegów na zieleń, estetykę miejsc publicznych oraz ich związek z polityką zrównoważonego rozwoju i podnoszeniem jakości życia mieszkańców w czasach zmian klimatycznych.
