The term consecratio mundi, despite its introduction to theology already before the Second Vatican Council, still sparks a lot of discussion and controversy. In this article we will address the issue of the sanctification of the world by lay people in accordance with the Church teaching. First, consecratio mundi will be presented as a specific mission of the lay faithful, then the article will present the basic planes of their involvement.

The current situation of lay people in the Church is strongly conditioned by how the relationship between laity and clergy (and laity–religious) evolved both in theology and in the practice of Church life in the previous centuries. The article is an attempt at providing a brief account of the history of these relations, beginning from the time when the functional distinction between clerics and lay people originated, through the period in which, in the context of a class society, the concept of states within the Church was introduced, and they were diversified within different perfection hierarchies, to the times when theology completed the circle, once again acknowledging the universal call to holiness in the Church, one that precedes all distinctions.

Luther insisted on the royal, common or universal priesthood of all the baptised, as the Second Vatican Council also recalled, referring to the mutual complementarity between the common and ministerial priesthood, which however differ non tantum gradu sed essentiam (cf. LG 10). These pages review the main points on the common priesthood, according to Luther's proposal and the response of the Councils of Trent and Vatican II and, as a complementary counterpoint, add the teachings of a 20th century Catholic author, Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer, partly before and partly after Vatican II, which could be of interest for understanding the subject under discussion. The similarities and differences are thus noted here, which are conducive to the subsequent ecumenical dialogue on this subject, which is acquiring particular importance in the context of the theology of synodality.

The value of cooperation between the clergy and lay people in the Church cannot be overestimated. The Church, realizing Christ’s mission of salvation, needs the involvement of all its members. Both the clergy and lay people should engage in dialogue, which requires awareness of one’s place, role, and duties within the Church community. Cooperation demands constant self-improvement, with its new forms and planes. This issue has gained significance in the light of the Synod of Bishops: “For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation and Mission”, convened by Pope Francis. The Synod has a new formula, based on listening to all the members of the Church. A special role in the synodal process is attributed to lay Catholics. The article attempts to discuss cooperation between the clergy and lay people in the Church in the context of the Synod of Bishops. It presents the synodal process and points to the most important planes of cooperation as well as challenges and hindrances it may encounter.

After a short introduction (pp. 1-5) dealing with the role of lay people in the preservation of the spirit of pure Yahwism among the Judeans in the post-exilic period, the author describes the reformist religious activites of Nehemiah (pp. 5-13). The account is based on the Book ot Nehemiah. He concludes by pointing to the most important traits of Nehemiah’s character. He believes that the strictly missionary activity of Ezra took place in the days of Nehemiah and was inspired by the latter.

The reactivation of the Catholic Action (CA) in Poland, which ended its activity in 1939, would have not been possible without the pre-war structures of this secular Catholic organization. Although the break in the existence of this organization in Poland lasted nearly 60 years, but the old form of activity, program and many of its works encouraged the Polish Church, by the initiative of John Paul II, to revive this entity. This article outlines the ideological basis for the creation of the first Catholic Action in the world. Its main organizational forms are also presented in the article, and at the same time, the similarity between the pre-war structures of CA in Poland and their Italian prototype. The last part of the paper outlines the process of creating pre-war structures of the Catholic Action in Poland, its legal basis and areas of activity. Althaough after the Second Vatican Council, there was another perception of the laity in the world, and its role in the Church increased, but the pre-war Catholic Action became a basis for creating a new organization in Poland. The reactivated Polish CA took on a rather traditional model, preserving the institution of the Church assistant as a secular liaison with the hierarchy of the Church.

In this article, the author focuses on the issue of pastoral care in the parish in terms of canon 517 (2) of the Code of Canon Law. The first part of the article presents the history of canon 517 (2). The second part highlights the reasons for entrusting the parish to persons without ordination to the priesthood. The third part is dedicated to the priest-moderator leading the parish under canon 517 (2), while the fourth part discusses collaborators of the priest–moderator within the parish. Entrusting people without ordained priesthood with certain pastoral functions in the parish is always an extraordinary and temporary situation, which should always be accompanied by work promoting priestly vocations.

Pope John Paul II taught that the parish is the “first community” for God’s People. It supports and enlivens contemporary Christians’ faith, it prepares one to liturgical life and introduces him into it, and it stimulates one to practice Christian love and to build a brotherly community. The Pope also pointed to the need of lay Catholics’ apostolic involvement in the life of the parish. Their main apostolic task is building the parish community as a community of faith, cult and love. The community should be at the same time a missionary community. Such an apostolic task concerns all the parish members. Religious associations and parish pastorate councils are a special field of lay people’s involvement in the life of the parish.

Holy water can help lay people in their pursuit of sainthood. It remindsthem about the sacrament of baptism and encourages to be grateful to Godfor such a great gift, to feel joy and pride in being Christian. It helps to prepare for the Eucharist and raises awareness God’s presence. Through holywater God absolves the venial sins when we use it in the spirit of remorse. This water constitutes an element of the blessing which is given by parentsto their children on the basis of priesthood arising from the mystery ofbaptism. It plays an important role in the Christian customs related to burial, indicating the exceptional meaning of human death, the dignity of the humanbody, the mystery of the purgatory and the significance of the prayer forthe dead. Holy water is used in blessings and shows the need to sanctify thewhole human life, the everyday existence, the various dimensions of humanlabour and activity. Sometimes it is kept in the houses of the believers towhich they can resort to in moments of temptation. Many saints talks of theimportance of holy water as protection from the evil spirit. Furthermore, itprovides consolation, reassurance in spiritual struggle and internal renewal. There is also the danger of abuse: mechanical use, giving up the spiritualstruggle with venial sins, neglecting everyday duties, magical thinking.
