Bartholomew Paprocki is one of the writers who used maxims as an unerring medium for the expression of philosophical and ethical thought. His Czech works contain maxims provided in the Latin language (in the original version or translated into Czech), versed paraphrases of Latin proverbs and also his own maxims which have provenance in the ancient and Renaissance era, and often appear not to be formed by the author. Many a time Paprocki resorts to Czech proverbs of the time. The maxims are intertwined into the content of his works or highlighted as titles of specific poems and chapters. These maxims can be divided into topical categories. The most frequently used themes are: friendship and “woman”. Paprocki explores, again and again, the greatness of human mind, the fading of beauty, human vices and death. His maxims contain moral lessons, instructions, admonitions. The author proposes a positive model of human behaviour.

Bartłomiej Paprocki należy do grona pisarzy wykorzystujących w swojej twórczości sentencję jako celną formę wyrazu myśli filozoficznej i etycznej. W jego czeskich dziełach występują sentencje w języku łacińskim (pozostawione w oryginale, lub tłumaczone na czeski), wierszowane parafrazy sentencji łacińskich, a także autorskie sentencje pisarza, które zdradzają jednak wpływy antyczne bądź renesansowe i często okazują się nieoryginalne. Niejednokrotnie Paprocki stosuje ówczesne czeskie przysłowia. Sentencje bywają wplecione w treść utworów lub wyodrębnione jako tytuły poszczególnych wierszy czy rozdziałów. Wśród sentencji można wyróżnić kilka grup tematycznych. Do najczęstszych należą: przyjaźń i kobieta. Paprocki wielokrotnie pisze też o potędze rozumu ludzkiego, przemijaniu urody, śmierci oraz wadach ludzkich. Sentencje zawierają nauki moralne, napomnienia, pouczenia, przestrogi. Autor proponuje pozytywny model postępowania człowieka.
