I my work I refer to separated in literary discourse from the wide range of non-fiction literature literary witness. Both types of literature from the assumption refer to authentic events and include truthful style of perception. In my article I try to investigate weather there are any differences between the truth of literature of fact and the truth literary witness on selected texts of three authors: Chaim Grade, Józef Mackiewicz i Czesław Miłosz.I must be pointed that literary witness in the first place struggling with specifying of the inner truth of the main character, who experienced a borderline situation. Literature of fact is a transcription of a story of an eyewitness, who forwards the truth of the events.

Artykuł jest poświęcony analizie nawiązań intertekstualnych, istniejących w opowiadaniu Piętno Gustawa Herlinga-Grudzińskiego, oraz relacji pomiędzy Piętnem a opowiadaniami Warłama Szałamowa, głownie – opowiadaniem Sherry Brandy. Przedmiotem rozważań są sposoby użycia przez Herlinga motywow i tematow, ktore najpierw pojawiły się właśnie w Sherry Brandy. Artykuł pokazuje zastosowanie tych motywow z perspektywy postmodernizmu i funkcjonowania literatury faktu w czasach totalnego panowania postmodernizmu.

The article is devoted to some features of the so-called literature of fact, to the specifi cation of the way citation functions in this type of literature, and to the analysis of intertextual references which exist in the short story Stigma by Gustaw Herling- Grudziński, and the relationship between the Stigma and the short stories by Warlam Shalamov, mostly – between the Stigma and the short story Cherry Brandy. The main subjects of the refl ection are ways in which Herling uses motives and themes, which have appeared for the fi rst time exactly in Sherry Brandy. The article shows the use of these motives from the perspective of postmodernism and all existence of literature of fact in times of total postmodernism domination.

This article is an attempt to answer the question: what is the specificity of the real existence, documented facts in a literary context. It examines the role of historical fact in the literature. It is alleged that the phenomenon of historical fact, included in the text, functions as an artistic image, that expanding the possibilities of the writer. That is why there is a need to study the fact with an additional of the image as well as understanding these facts as a means of artistic expression for a particular person in a particular historical period under specific circumstances.
