The Problem and the Meaning of Material Poverty in the Age of Globalization. The Ethical and Pedagogical Aspect

The author discusses the social and anthropological problem of material poverty from the ethical and pedagogical perspective. The article consists of three sections which respectively concentrate on the following topics: (a) poverty and globalization, (b) ways of helping the needy, and (c) poverty as a chance for personal development. The author concludes that poverty improperly approached by society can lead to a depersonalization of both the poor and those who live with them: the former are attached with tags or marginalized, and the latter miss the chance for personal development. In order to avoid depersonalization, then, poverty should be understood not only as a social problem, but also as a valuable lesson of humanity.

The constant changes and transformations that characterize modern times, on the one hand, generate many new opportunities and contribute to the improvement of the process of building the quality of life, and on the other hand, they are the source of numerous socio-economic inequalities, leading to the emergence of serious barriers to access to education. Such a situation creates a need to undertake actions aimed at equalizing educational opportunities of young people brought up in poor, neglected, socially and culturally marginalized environments. Education focused on the inclusion of all students is a new, valuable paradigm in the field of upbringing and educating the young generation that takes into account young people’s individual needs and possibilities. The main goal of this educational paradigm is to meet the problems of inequality and social exclusion, and thus equalize educational opportunities for children and youth.

Ciągłe zmiany i przeobrażenia charakteryzujące współczesne czasy z jednej strony generują wiele nowych możliwości i przyczyniają się do doskonalenia procesu budowania jakości życia, a z drugiej stanowią źródło powstawania licznych nierówności społeczno-ekonomicznych prowadzących do powstawania poważnych barier w dostępie do edukacji. Sytuacja taka rodzi zapotrzebowanie na podejmowanie działań służących wyrównywaniu szans edukacyjnych młodych ludzi wychowywanych w środowiskach biednych, zaniedbanych, marginalizowanych społecznie i kulturowo. Za nowy, wartościowy paradygmat w procesach służących organizowaniu wychowania i kształcenia młodego pokolenia uznaje się w związku z takimi potrzebami edukację nastawioną na włączanie wszystkich uczniów z uwzględnieniem ich indywidualnych potrzeb i możliwości; edukację, której głównym celem jest wychodzenie naprzeciw problemom nierówności i wykluczenia społecznego i tym samym wyrównywanie szans edukacyjnych dzieci i młodzieży.
