This sketch analyses the series of images used by rock and metal bands (King Crimson, Voivod, Pestilence) on their selected album covers. They depict a distinctive motif of a face wincing because of some extreme traumatic sensation. Sources of theses extreme emotions are various, but one of the most significant is a sudden awareness of threats deriving form the unstoppable development of technology. Selected lyrics focusing on ominous and dystopian themes are also reflected upon and analysed. Their content clearly confirms the presence of fears and obsessions embedded in rock and metal music.

Artykuł dotyczy inspiracji, zapożyczeń i przetworzeń motywów horroru filmowego obecnych w wideoklipach zespołów heavymetalowych. Podkreślono w nim aspekt zróżnicowanego podejścia twórców teledysków heavymetalowych do toposów horroru interpretowanych w kontekście specyfiki poszczególnych gatunków muzyki metalowej. Analizy wybranych przykładów dokonano w ujęciu kulturoznawczym oraz filmoznawczym.

The article concerns inspirations, borrowings and transformations of motifs from horror movies, present in music videos of heavy metal bands. It emphasises the aspect of diverse approach of heavy metal music video makers to horror topos, interpreted in the context of specific metal music genres. The analysis of selected examples was conducted with the use of cultural and film-related approach.

W artykule starano się przedstawić uwikłanie niszowej muzyki w cyfrową dystrybucję dźwięku. XXI wiek miał być wiekiem nisz – w koncepcji „długiego ogona”. Jak funkcjonuje muzyka niszowa w sytuacji powszechnego dostępu, wszystkożerności oraz kultury nadmiaru? Czy słuchacz docenia możliwość korzystania z ogromnej bazy muzycznej, czy też zagubiony próbuje korzystać ze wskazań algorytmu; jakie są jego preferencje; czy słucha wyselekcjonowanej muzyki (gatunku, wykonawcy)? A może muzyka jest dla niego nieprzerwanym potokiem dźwięku, traktowanym niezwykle funkcjonalnie.

The article attempts to present the entanglement of niche music in the digital distribution of sound. The 21st century was supposed to be the age of niches – in accordance with the concept of a “long tail”. How does niche music function in a situation of universal access, omnivorousness and culture of excess? Does the listener appreciate the possibility of using a huge musical base or does the lost listener try to use the indications of the algorithm; what are his preferences; is he listening to selected music (genre, performer)? Or perhaps, music is for him an uninterrupted stream of sound, treated in an incredibly functional way.
