Wismar ’86

On June 15—24, 1986 Wismar played the host to an international town-planning seminar organized under the auspices of the national committee of ICOMOS in GDR. The main object of the seminar was to work out a concept of spatial development of part of the Old Town within Marienkircheplatz in Wismar. The Polish delegation to the seminar included dr Alicja Miramowska-Kurtz and two architects from Warsaw branch office of the Ateliers of Monuments Protection, namely Ewa Kinacka and Ryszard Szczęsny. The- concept presented by the Polish group takes into account both historic and spatial conditions of the town as well as assumptions of the organizers. It also attempts to answer the questions set by the organizers. Throughout its centuries-long history (the town was known already in the 12th century) Wismar underwent numerous expansions and rebuildings. The way and direction of those actions depended on the location of the town. Wismar, situated on an elevation, is surrounded by lakes, canals and bogs. Part of old structures has been totally or partially ruined. Still, a number of monuments have survived until today, amongst them historic monuments found within the Old Town. The entire old-town complex belongs to "A” zone of conservationist protection. In accordance with the assumptions of the organizers the main point of interest to the authors of the concept was part of the Old Town in Marienkircheplatz as well as a palace and garden complex adjoining it from the south-east. Still, the authors have expanded a delimited site with St George’s Sq. and adjoining streets (Grosse Hohe Strasse, Neustadt Strasse); they have also included into their concept historic monuments that were on that site. The proposed town-planning concept of developing par'c of the Old Town in Wismar is of a theoretical nature. Too short time set by the organizers did not make it possible for the authors to specify details. Therefore, the concept should be considered as a proposed line of thinking and acting.
