The article studies the main trends in Ukrainian-German literary connections in the 19th century - the beginning of 20th century. Special attention is paid to the Ukrainian folklore influencing the creative work of German researchers, to the interpenetration of literatures progressing in the 19th century - at the beginning of the 20th century, and to the contacts establishing between the Ukrainian and German men of letters. The role played by the Ukrainian writers in the active assimilation of the works by I. Kotliarevsky, T. Shevchenko, Marko Vovchok and others, by German literary community, is described. The contribution of I. Franko to the development of Ukrainian-German literary connections in the mentioned period is covered. The translation practice of writers in these two countries that considerably expanded and consolidated the cultural interaction between them is analyzed. Particularly, this refers to the understanding the reception of the heritage left by T.Shevchenko. J. Goethe, H. Heine etc.
