While the generic function of masculine personal nouns is a well-known and thoroughly described phenomenon, there have been no studies devoted to this role of feminine nouns, such as pielęgniarka ‘female nurse’ or przedszkolanka ‘female kindergarten teacher’. This paper fills this gap and examines the use of feminitives in this function and its consequences. It also reports on a questionnaire study the results of which point to the participants’ uncertainty as to the choice of the generic masculine or feminine nouns and its dependence on the subjects’ gender and the morphological structure of words.

O ile ogólne (odnoszące się do obu płci) znaczenie rzeczowników męskoosobowych jest dobrze znanym i opisanym zjawiskiem, o tyle funkcja generyczna nazw żeńskich, takich jak pielęgniarka czy przedszkolanka, nie została dotąd zbadana. Artykuł uzupełnia istniejącą lukę i analizuje użycie feminatywów w tej roli wraz z jego konsekwencjami. Relacjonuje także badanie, którego wyniki wskazują na niepewność ankietowanych w kwestii wyboru ogólnych nazw sfeminizowanych zawodów oraz zależność podejmowanych przez nich decyzji od płci oraz struktury morfologicznej wyrazów.
