Shame, embarrassment and guilt: Corpus evidence for the cross-cultural structure of social emotions

This article is a cross-cultural and cross-linguistic comparison of three interrelated emotional categories of shame, embarrassment and guilt in two different cultural settings of individualistic societies, as represented here by Britain and America, and a collectivist society, such as Poland. The conceptual field of SHAME is operationalized through its three near-synonymous adjectival exponents, "ashamed"/"zawstydzony", "embarrassed"/"zażenowany", and "guilty"/"winny". Drawing on relevant research in social and cognitive psychology as well as linguistics, the present study applies advanced quantitative corpus-based methodology to reconstruct the cultural and conceptual profiles of the three emotions.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest zbadanie relacji synonimicznych, jakie występują między dwoma fińskimi wyrażeniami nakazu, tulee i on -t(t)ava w języku prawnym. Analiza opiera się na wynikach ankiety, w której wzięło udział 336 użytkowników języka fińskiego. Oba wyrażenia są najczęściej występującymi wyrażeniami nakazu w aktach normatywnych i można uznać je za częściowe synonimy. Mimo to, nie były dotychczas badane pod kątem synonimii w języku prawnym. Zebrane komentarze respondentów pozwoliły wyróżnić dziesięć cech różnicujących oba wyrażenia, dzięki czemu mogą one stanowić uzupełnienie istniejących definicji słownikowych, w których nie wszystkie cechy zostały uwzględnione.

The aim of this research is to examine synonymy between two obligation expressions, tulee and on -t(t)ava, in Finnish legal language on the basis of the results of a survey. The analysis is based on the responses of 336 Finnish language users. Both expressions are the most frequent means of expressing obligation in normative acts and they can be regarded as near-synonyms. However, the synonymy between them has not been studied in legal language so far. On the basis of respondents’ comments ten differentiating features have been found. The features distinguished in the research can provide some additional information on the usage of the expressions because not all of the features have been addressed in the dictionaries so far.
