Among the many factors that influence the voting behaviour of individual voters, various spatial characteristics have repeatedly been cited as important factors. The diverse impacts of spatial characteristics are collectively referred to as contextual effects. Contextual effects impact voters in different ways: through differences in the local geographical and socio-economic conditions, the varying influence of local communication interactions, observational influences, differences in local political socialisation and local campaigning, or through the effect of candidate residency. This article presents an overview of the most frequently discussed contextual effects and formulates a general typology of them.

This paper analyses the influence of suburbanization on the electoral behaviour of residents based on the election data of the Lithuanian Parliament (2000 – 2012), and the President and the municipality. The research area is Vilnius suburban zone which is dominated by the Polish identity residents. The intensifying suburbanization may lead to ethnicity conflict between local residents (the Polish) and new suburbans who are mainly Lithuanians. The election data in Vilnius suburban zone were analysed in the context of neighbourhood effect and spatial context theories. According to the two theories, there are two types of voters, namely the newcomers - who prefer political centre – right and the long – term residents, who are mainly Polish voters for political centre – left. The distribution trend of different voters are closely related to the population changes in Vilnius suburban zone. References 20. Figs 5. Table 1. In Lithuanian, summary in English.
