W latach 1944-1956 liczba straconych na podstawie wyroków sądowych, zmarłych i zamordowanych wyniosła nie mniej niż 50 tysięcy osób, z czego co najmniej kilkanaście tysięcy było skutkiem podjętych przez nich walki i oporu przeciwko komunizmowi. Grzebano ich skrycie w utajnionych i w większości nieznanych do dziś miejscach. Z mocy prawa ich poszukiwanie, odnajdywanie, ekshumacje i identyfikacje genetyczne są statutowymi obowiązkami Instytutu Pamięci Narodowej. Proces poszukiwań nieznanych miejsc pochówku ofiar totalitaryzmów powinien być realizowany przez struktury państwa przy wydatnym współdziałaniu ośrodków naukowych, przy niezbędnych nowych regulacjach prawnych ograniczających niekontrolowane działania prowadzone przez pozainstytucjonalnych animatorów poszukiwań.

In the years 1944-1956, the number of individuals executed based on court judgments, murdered or who died of other, unspecified causes amounted to no less than 50 thousand, with at least 10 thousand or more of these deaths resulting from the involvement of the victims in the struggle and resistance against communism. The victims were interred in secrecy, with no information given as to the place of their burial, so that even today, in most cases, the location of their bodies remains unknown. Under the provision of applicable laws, the Institute of National Remembrance engages in the search, exhumation and identification of the bodies on the basis of DNA analysis. The efforts to locate the burial sites of the victims of the totalitarian regimes should be led by government institutions in strict cooperation with research institutions; in this regard, new legal regulations are necessary in order to limit the uncontrolled search operations conducted by non-institutional parties.
