The work at hand deals with the art of orations in Jan Bielski’s Ćwiczenia krasomówsko-prawne. The analysis focused on the author›s remarks concerning rhetoric, which are to be found in the foreword, and in selected “juridical cases”. Rhetoric is perceived as helpful field in getting honours. Moreover, it is useful in unmasking the falsehood and reconciling antagonists. On the other hand, rhetoric is also shown as the “craft” which can serve vile, godless cells and which, “uncontrollable”, causes the disaster. Bielski’s Ćwiczenia... made young people aware, that acquaintance of rhetoric has a real influence on the outside world.

The following article deals with a possibility of finding some parallels between oratory art and staging. They are often hidden in a text structure, but also an old practice allows us to point many similarities between both arts. Some ancient, medieval treatises were chosen for the further analysis.

This paper discusses a legation of Jan Szczęsny Herburt (1567–1616) to Ottoman Porte and its’ effect among local nobility of Przemyśl Land. Herburt delivered a speech presumably on 19 January 1600 at the regional diet (summoned prior to the National Diet) in Sądowa Wisznia. The speech included not only his impressions from the mission to the Ottoman Porte in 1598 but also his opinion on the current internal and external policies of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The text confirms the author’s good education and considerable refinement, as well as his notable oratorical skills.

The article presents a critical edition of two funeral speeches made by Wojciech Miaskowski, yet not printed before. The first one was made while the body of Wojciech Gajewski was carried through Poznan, the latter one – during the funeral. Both oratory pieces, which were widely appreciated among the researches of old Polish oratory, provide us with new information on the life of the soldier who died in battle at the walls of Smolensk. The author of the article prepared a transcription of the speeches, followed by an introduction including the most important details on Miaskowski and Gajewski’s lives, as well as the discussion on the hereditary issues concerning the speeches. The first one made during the body’s passage is an example of oratio ab hospitibus, that is a speech for the guests, whereas the latter is oratio gratiarum actoria, that is the family’s thanksgiving. Edition of the oratory pieces was accompanied by a family tree, critical apparatus and explanations given to the works.

The subject of the editio critica are two wedding speeches, written anonymously together with the diary of Michał Leon Obuchowicz (the manuscript from the Library of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Kórnik). The first speech is from the wedding of Prudencja Gosiewska and the second one is the exemplary speech made while giving the bride to the groom. There is a hypothesis that Michał Leon Obuchowicz is actually the author of both speeches. Even though the diaries were edited twice (in 1859, Vilnus and 2003, Warsaw), the texts have never been published. The author of the article postulates for including the editio critica in the editions of old diaries.

Kongregacja Oratorium Pana Naszego Jezusa Chrystusa, wytwór francuskiej szkoły duchowości, symbol kontrreformacji, została założona we Francji na początku XVII w. z inicjatywy Pierre’a de Berulle.

The Congregation of the Oratory of Jesus, a symbol of the Catholic Reformation and representative of the French School of spirituality, was created in France at the beginning of the 17th century, on the initiative of Pierre de Berulle. Firmly established in its 70 houses through the kingdom, the congregation appears, at first sight, to have remained unaffected by the hazards of financial crises, although some houses did know a sort of financial distress. The aim of the paper is to offer a bird’s eye view of the Oratory by examining the records of deliberations of the Council and its central administration, kept in the National Archives, and to explore the situation in the northern part of the kingdom. The second part of the paper is devoted to the complex situation of the House of Toulouse and the three phases of the crisis which took place there.

The aim of the study is to analyse organizational and legal forms, currently used for the functioning of the oratories in the Salesian Province of Warsaw and to attempt to answer the question in what ways they help in the implementation of the Salesian charism and to what extent they can constitute a threat to the Salesian identity of the oratories. The source of this identity is the experience of Valdocco that Don Bosco gave his spiritual sons and daughters, and its guarantor is always the Salesian community. The forms of activities carried out by the oratories have evolved along with the changing needs and the socio-political situation. The new law which was implemented in Poland after the political transformation in 1989 provided the Salesians with new tools for their educational and care work. One of such tools adopted in the Province of Warsaw is establishment of associations which, on the one hand, stimulate the laity to act but, at the same time, carry the risk of excessive independence from the Salesian community and, therefore, also pose a threat to the Salesian identity of the oratories.
