The paper presents a few observations concerning the development of child’s speech in the context of phonetic realization and phonological status of the so called soft counterparts of the velar stops in such words as: kiedy, kieszeń, węgiel, ogień in the Standard Polish. Generally speaking, collected data are ambiguous.
In the paper the author presents various opinion on the phonetic assessment and the phonological status of the palatal counterparts of the velar sounds in Polish as well as the historical development and the dialectal diversity of the given consonants. Generally speaking, the sounds in question are treated as the separate phones /k’/, /g’/ or the positional allophones of /k/, /g/, /x/ appearing before /i/, /j/.
