The subject of the article is to discuss parental autonomy and its limits in the sphere of an agreement on the manner of exercising parental authority and maintaining contact with the child after divorce or sepa-ration of the parents. The focus was on issues related to the form, character and content of the parenting agreement in Polish family law. The origin, development, current legal status and court practice in the application of the institution of parental agreement are discussed. Next, important and interesting legal solutions concerning this institution, adopted and functioning in Dutch and American law (using the example of the state of Illinois), are presented. The article includes several de lege ferenda remarks ad-dressed to the Polish legislator - particularly in the context of regulating the content of the parenting agreement and possibly introducing a template for such an agreement.
