The Catholic Church is a universal community. Therefore, the Catholic Church cares of people living outside their homeland. The primary objective of the structures of pastoral care of migrants is the integration of immigrants into the local community. The pastoral care of migrants should be adapted to the migrants needs, their culture and traditions. The pastoral care of migrants operates at three levels: the universal, the particular and the local. According to the Catholic Church migration is an international problem that should be resolved with the cooperation of all countries. The issue of cultural differences between migrants and local communities, should mitigate through learning of basic human rights.

The paper presents the document Guidelines for Polish-language Pastoral Care in Germany, which was prepared by the German and Polish Episcopal Conferences. This joint document, signed on 17 September 2001, is analysed in the context of the provisions included in the instruction Erga migrantes caritas Christi issued by the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People on 3 May 2004. At the beginning of the paper, the author presents a brief history of Polish-language pastoral care in Germany. The successive parts of the Guidelines are then discussed: the preamble, the task and purpose of Polish-language pastoral care, the function of the delegate, pastors and vicars of Polish-language Catholic missions, lay people in Polish-language Catholic missions. Each of these parts is presented in the light of the Erga migrantes instruction. An analysis of both documents clearly shows their consistency and the fact that the Guidelines implement the objectives of the subsequently published Erga migrantes instruction.

The Christian communities already in the antiquity took care of refugees and migrants. In the following centuries, the Church has repeatedly called for help provided to foreigners, placing particular emphasis on satisfying their spiritual needs. Therefore, recommendations were made to provide pastoral care in their mother tongue or even to create personal parishes for them. The intensification of the Church’s teaching on migration has taken place in the second half of the twentieth century and continues to this day. The documents of the Holy See and the Popes’ statements focus on showing the advantages and dangers of migration and point to various ways of the concern for migrants.

Wspólnoty chrześcijańskie już w starożytności otaczały troską uchodźców i migrantów. W kolejnych wiekach Kościół wielokrotnie wzywał do udzielania pomocy cudzoziemcom, kładąc szczególny nacisk na zaspokojenie ich potrzeb duchowych. Z tego względu wydawano zalecenia, aby zapewnić im duszpasterstwo w języku ojczystym na nawet tworzyć dla nich parafie personalne. Intensyfikacja nauczania Kościoła na temat migracji nastąpiła w drugiej połowie XX wieku i trwa do dnia dzisiejszego. Dokumenty Stolicy Apostolskiej i wypowiedzi papieży koncentrują się na ukazaniu walorów i niebezpieczeństw związanych z migracją oraz wskazują różne sposoby troski o migrantów.

The current growing migration wave in Europe has been a challenge not only for politicians and economists, but also for the Church in Poland, which, so far, has not struggled in this area. Her past experience was mainly related to the pastoral care of Poles living in exile in many countries of the world. The article deals with pastoral problems related to the intensity of migration movements. It also shows, on the basis of sociological research, changes in the attitudes of Poles towards migrants and refugees, and then introduces the main ideas of the Church’s teaching on the phenomenon of migration. In the fi nal part, the article tries to formulate proposals that could usedas an impulse for the Polish pastoral ministry.

Rosnąca od kilku lat fala migracyjna w Europie jest wyzwaniem nie tylko dla polityków i ekonomistów, ale także dla Kościoła w Polsce, który dotąd w takim zakresie nie zmagał się z tym problemem. Jego dotychczasowe doświadczenia związane były przede wszystkim z duszpasterstwem Polaków przebywających na emigracji w wielu państwach świata. Artykuł podejmuje rozważania wokół pastoralnych problemów związanych z natężeniem ruchów migracyjnych. Przedstawia na podstawie badań socjologicznych zmiany postaw Polaków wobec migrantów i uchodźców, a następnie przybliża główne myśli nauczania Kościoła odnośnie do zjawiska migracji. W końcowej części podejmuje próbę sformułowania propozycji, które mogą stać się impulsem dla polskiego duszpasterstwa.

The article is an attempt to illustrate the concept of migration and its impact on the family from three perspectives: legal, psychological and social teaching of the Catholic Church. The paper presents, inter alia, the basic legal documents which regulate the issues related to migration and the forced migration of families, psychological aspects and their impact on the functioning of a person and family as a community of individuals and discusses the basic documents and statements of selected popes regarding migration. The articles finishes with conclusions that could serve as examples of specific solutions to help a family who has experienced migration.

Artykuł jest próbą zilustrowania pojęcia migracji i jej wpływu na rodzinę z trzech perspektyw: prawnej, psychologicznej i społecznej nauki Kościoła katolickiego. Artykuł przedstawia między innymi podstawowe dokumenty prawne regulujące kwestie związane z migracją i przymusową migracją rodzin, aspekty psychologiczne i ich wpływ na funkcjonowanie osoby i rodziny jako wspólnoty jednostek oraz omawia podstawowe dokumenty i oświadczenia wybranych papieży dotyczących migracji. Artykuły kończą się wnioskami, które mogą posłużyć za przykład konkretnych rozwiązań pomagających rodzinie, która doświadczyła migracji.

Kościół katolicki zawsze uczestniczył w niesieniu pomocy i opieki dla uchodźców bez względu na ich pochodzenie i wyznanie, czego można doszukać się w jego historii. Pomoc Kościoła przybierała różne formy i postacie. Wśród nich można wymienić: udzielanie schronienia, pomoc o charakterze duchowym i finansowym, zapewnianie opieki sierotom, organizowanie półkolonii i wakacji dla dzieci, opieka nad bezdomnymi, organizowanie pośrednictwa pracy, kursów języka oraz pomoc prawnej i psychologicznej.

The Roman Catholic Church has always shared in carrying the help and the care for refugees irrespective of their origin and faith what it is possible to find in his history. The help of the Church assumed different forms and characters. Among them can be mentioned: giving shelter, help with a spiritual and financial character, providing care for orphans, organizing day camps and holidays for children, carrying for the homeless, arranging job placement, language courses, providing legal and psychological assistance.
