In the history of the 20th century literature sensational novels have always sought popularity despite many commentaries disqualifying the genre and labeling it as substandard. For example, after 1989 and next to the rising importance of the narrator hero - in relation to the so-far significance of the social-political background - the requirements concerning the form of expression have changed. Genres, which in literary tradition took an underpriviliged position, have become more popular. Their distinctive qualities have been used to make the story more attractive. This has happened to the popular novel, the family novel as well as the sensational one. On the Olsztyn literary scene, over the course of the decades of the post war period, several writers reached for a criminal story as the genre which, apart from the sensational story, was supposed to fill the regional thread of Warmia and Mazuria. The author of the article has in mind here Tadeusz Stępowski and Juliusz Grodziński, however within the Olsztyn literary circle only Tadeusz Ostaszewski developed this section of peripheral literature which gained popularity among the so-called average readers. It seems interesting that the writer gathers extreme opinions of his books: from applause and endorsement to accusations of graphomania and literary double-talk.

The article is an analysis of the well-known and popular novel by Jerzy Sosnowski – “Apocrypha of Aglaya”. Although the problem of the unusual complexity of the story and the mystery of the sense within it is usually raised, the author of the article believes that the work can be examined with simple analytical tools, without resorting to analytical instruments more complex than those used at school. Obviously “Apocrypha of Aglaya” draws on various traditions and conventions, but it is generally based on known plot patterns. However, it is original and valuable, it contains important statements about the modern condition of man, without ceasing to be a romance and a thriller. The article is methodologically structuralist and opposes postmodern research trends.

W artykule omówiono problematykę i synkretyczną poetykę dwóch „kryminałów retro” W. Karatkiewicza. Pisarz w dobie dominacji realizmu socjalistycznego połączył w swych utworach ważne idee (kształtowanie świadomości narodowej Białorusinów, interpretacja historii Białorusi) z elementami sensacji i romantycznym wątkiem miłosnym, charakterystycznymi dla modnej dzisiaj kultury masowej, wyprzedzając tym samym swoje czasy.

In the era of dominance of socialist realism the author combined important ideas (defining Belarusians’ national awareness, interpreting the history of Belarus) with the elements of sensation and romantic love motif, typical of modern popular culture which are ahead of their time.

Fiction can be a valuable source of information on tasks and working methods of secret services. It concerns mainly spy novels, but not only – also detective novels, thrillers and political fiction. Some of authors have expertise about special services, because they worked previously in such institutions. In such novels, one can find information on the organizational structures of secret services, their actions and motivation systems, recruitment methods and reasons for which recruited people agree to work as secret agents. Very specific examples of operational measures can be found in them, such as: operational communication means, surveillance techniques, building protection or even such complicated operational method as a secret search.

The article presents the Trylogia Berlińska [The Berlin Trilogy] by Magdalena Parys, a Polish writer living in Berlin. The series consists of three thrillers (Tunel, 2011; Magik, 2014; Biała Rika, 2016 [Tunnel, Magician, White Rika]) which critics have described as „political thrillers”. In the multi-threaded plots, set both in the contemporary and historical realities (World War II and the immediate post-war period), Polish émigrés, rooted in the Berlin’s metropolitan area, without complexes and pursuing their professional goals play a special role. The Poles include representatives of the middle generation - Germans of Polish descent, policemen, photographers, journalists who investigate vicious and unsolved murder cases. The confrontation of characters of Polish descent with their German peers, whose parents and grandparents live with the trauma of expulsion or of being a victim of Stasi surveillance, makes the reader think about the memory and the problem of German-Polish relations in the 21st century.

On the example of the fantasy-novel Gonitva written by a young Belarusian author Nicky Rakitina and action-packed novel Good Angel of Death by Andrey Kurkov, the article presents an analysis of the way ethnic images and stereotypes function in the Russian-language literature of Belarus and Ukraine. Works chosen for the analysis belong to the different national literatures and different genres, but clearly indicate the prospects of how writers can turn their views on the national traditions and play with national codes and images.

Artykuł dotyczy funkcjonowania etnoobrazów i stereotypów narodowych w rosyjskojęzycznej literaturze Białorusi i Ukrainy na przykładzie powieści fantasy młodej pisarki białoruskiej Niki Rakitinej Gonitwa oraz powieści sensacyjnej znanego pisarza ukraińskiego Andreja Kurkowa Dobry anioł śmierci. Wybrane do analizy utwory należą do różnych literatur narodowych i reprezentują odmienne gatunki literackie, mimo to przekonująco świadczą o artystycznym potencjale związanym z wykorzystaniem przez pisarzy współczesnych tradycji narodowych oraz podejmowaniem gry literackiej z narodowymi kodami i obrazami.
