The article entitled The Image that Strengthens the Assault on Reason: ‘Ohio Improptu’ by Samuel Beckett is an attempt to interpret the minimalist, experimental play by Samuel Beckett whose complexity reaches far beyond the cryptic simplicity of the text. As a drama specimen Ohio Improptu makes use of drama conventions(spoken word, stage visualization) yet, it incorporates them into an overall concept of iterability. As a result, the play does not yield to the interpretative tools of the methodology of drama interpretation. Moreover, it does not yield to any interpretation methods based on the categories of binary thinking that have their roots in the opposition reason-emotion used by a man equipped with the conceptual categories worked out by reason.There is a multifarious image at the centre of Ohio Improptu embracing various spaciotemporal dimensions, theatrical codes, conventions, based on iterability and transferring the sphere of experience beyond reason onto the recipient. The very mode of evoking the experience is strikingly similar to koan, a Buddhist prayer, which obliterates the meaning of the communicated words to give the full expression to experience.

Artykuł zatytułowany The Image that Strengthens the Assault on Reason: ‘Ohio Improptu’ by Samuel Beckett jest próbą odczytania minimalistycznej, eksperymentalnej sztuki Samuela Becketta daleko, w jej złożoności, wychodzącej poza szczupłość tekstu. Jako dzieło sztuki dramatopisarskiej Ohio Improptu czerpie wprawdzie z konwencji dramatu (np. słowo mówione, wizualizacja sceniczna), wkomponowując je, przede wszystkim, w derridowską koncepcję powtarzalności (iterability). W efekcie sztuka neguje nie tylko wszelkie możliwości interpretacyjne w zakresie metodologii badań dramatu, ale wręcz wszelkie możliwości interpretacyjne opierające się na kategoriach binarnego myślenia wywodzącego się z opozycji rozum-emocja, którymi człowiek współczesny wciąż posługuje się, dysponując instrumentarium koncepcyjnym wytworzonym przez rozum. W centrum Ohio Improptu znajduje się wieloaspektowy obraz sceniczny skupiający w sobie różne wymiary czasoprzestrzenne, kody teatralne, konwencje, oparty na powtarzalności, przeno- szący sferę doświadczenia (experience beyond reason) na odbiorcę. Sposób wywołania jednostkowego przeżycia (tytułowe improptu) przypomina buddyjską modlitwę, która w założeniach, zaciera sens przekazywanych słów na rzecz głębokiego doświad – czenia.

The aim of this paper is to present the role of time in the everyday functioning of society in the dynamically changing world. Some examples of the influence of time on human life are carefully analyzed in the text. The purpose of this work is to confirm the thesis that time is important in the everyday life of society over the years. The main issue of this paper is not only time as a complex phenomenon that takes place in the world but it also intends to prove its irreversible influence on human life and the entire society. Based on the scientific publications cited in the text, the connection between the passage of time and the course of human life, as well as the activities of society, is explained. The most important conclusion is that time has a huge influence on human existence. However, these days, due to the occurring rush, people are often unable to realise the effect of time.

Tematem niniejszej pracy jest przedstawienie roli czasu w codziennym funkcjonowaniu społeczeństwa, w dynamicznie zmieniającym się świecie. W tekście zostają dokładnie przeanalizowane przykłady oddziaływania czasu na ludzkie życie pod względem różnych jego aspektów. Praca ma na celu potwierdzenie tezy mówiącej o istocie ważności czasu w codzienności społeczeństwa na przestrzeni lat. Problematyką poniższej pracy jest nie tylko ukazanie czasu jako złożonego zjawiska występującego w świecie, ma ona również w zamyśle udowodnić jego nieodwracalny wpływ na życie człowieka i całego społeczeństwa. W oparciu o publikacje naukowe przywołane w tekście wyjaśnione zostaje połączenie między upływem czasu, a przebiegiem ludzkiego życia, jak i działania społeczeństwa. Najważniejszym wnioskiem wyciągniętym na koniec pracy jest ukazanie, za pomocą poprzedzających go przykładów, że czas ma ogromny wpływ na ludzkie życie. Człowiek jednak przez panujący w tych czasach pośpiech nie jest często w stanie tego dostrzec.

The article discusses Metaphor Identification Procedure Vrije Universiteit (known as MIPVU, Steen et al. 2010) as a method that can be systematically applied to localize metaphorical expressions in discourse. Apart from outlining the steps of the procedure, we focus on the theoretical assumptions underlying its origin as well as point at some benefits and difficulties arising during its application to English and Polish data. The primary aim of the article is to present MIPVU as an attempt at creating a reliable and replicable metaphor identification method that can be used in different text types and different languages.
