This article centers on the literary achievements of preacher Antoni Węgrzynowicz (1658-1721) from the collection Nuptiae Agni . Gody Baranka apokaliptycznego… (Krak.w 1711) – „Nuptials of the Apocalyptic Lamb” (transl.) – in which there are, among other things, a series of conceptual sermons – refer to the fragment of Apocalypse 21, 19-20, relates to the twelve precious stones being the foundations of the Heavenly Jerusalem, traditionally associated with the names of the apostles. The author presents spiritual content, ingeniously built on knowledge of natural sciences regarding the properties of precious stones, derived from the writings of past and contemporary naturalists, from encyclopedic texts, biblical commentaries, baroque symbolographic compendia, and specialized literature for church speakers. The article discusses these sources of knowledge and seeks to present the writing strategies used by Węgrzynowicz concerning the study of precious stones.

The Book of Revelation uses many words connected with nature and the process of creation. One of the most interesting categories is that of jewels and precious stones, partly because of the great variety which are presented. They are incorporated into the foundations of the walls of the New Jerusalem – called the wife of the Lamb (21:9) – and present an image of the richness and variety of God’s relationship with his people. The localization of the stones seems to describe an intimacy, a spiritual depth and a latency. The spectrum of colors, available only in the light, is used here as a kind of God’s presentation – He is described by a gold, a brightness, a jasper and a clear glass. The level of intimacy with God is conditioned by the greatness of the sphere of beauty, available to a human being. The names of the Apostles on the stones focus attention on the aspect of community, and the sequence of ordinal numerals reveals the harmony and order of that relationship. It is interesting that the author does not relegate such intimacy with God to a future, eschatological time, but rather invites the reader to discover it now, in the personal reality of the spiritual life.

Księga Apokalipsy św. Jana posługuje się licznymi terminami, przynależącymi do puli semantycznej świata stworzonego. Uwagę wśród nich przyciągają kamienie, z racji największego bogactwa rodzajowego. Włączone w obraz fundamentów Nowego Jeruzalem – Oblubienicy Baranka oddają bogactwo i różnorodność przejawów relacji Boga z człowiekiem. Ich lokacja wydaje się oddawać refleks intymności, ukrycia, głębi duchowej. Paleta barw, dostępna ludzkiej percepcji jedynie przy świetle, w konwencji Apokalipsy odsyła do Stwórcy, opisanego w porównaniu do złota, blasku, jaspisu, przejrzystości kryształu. Stopień bliskości z Nim warunkuje obszar odkrytego piękna. Aspekt wspólnotowy, oddany został wzmianką o imionach Apostołów na poszczególnych warstwach kamieni. Sekwencja wyakcentowana liczebnikami porządkowymi uwypukla harmonię i ład obecne w tej przestrzeni relacji. Co znamienne autor natchniony nie odsuwa tej ostatniej w przyszłość eschatologiczną, lecz zaprasza do odkrywania dziś, w rzeczywistości osobistego życia duchowego.
