The article analyses the structure and functions of seventy-three titles extracted from the first Polish-language popular-science journal, i.e. Nowe Wiadomości Ekonomiczne i Uczone. It was determined that the examined titles included both uninomial and binomial titles (25) as well as multinomial ones (48). Uninomial titles relate only to relatively short texts whose publication fell within a single issue of the journal. Long texts, divided into several parts and published in subsequent issues of the journal, had multinomial titles. The analysed titles (just as in the case of the titles of strictly-scientific modern articles) fulfilled the informative and substantial function. However, they did not perform the pragmatic and persuasive functions typical of the headlines present in modern popular-science press.

The article focuses on an outstanding Polish publisher and ethnographer – Philip Sulimierski (1843–1885). Although trained as a mathematician, he was a traveler at heart and edited the magazine “Wędrowiec”. It was the first illustrated tourism and travel magazine in Poland. This 19th century-magazine was so original for its time that the format of “National Geographic” was based on it. Sulimierski was also the creator and editor of the “Dictionary of the Polish Kingdom and other Slavic Countries”, which to this day remains an invaluable resource for geographers, ethnologists and historians.

P owstanie Niezależnego Samorządnego Związku Zawodowego „Solidarność” po fali strajków na Wybrzeżu w sierpniu 1980 r. spowodowało polaryzację w Polskiej Zjednoczonej Partii Robotniczej. Artykuł przedstawia stosunek redakcji krakowskiego dziennika PZPR, „Gazety Krakowskiej” (do 31 grudnia 1980 r. – „Gazety Południowej”) do „Solidarności” od września 1980 r. (tj. zakończenia strajków na Wybrzeżu) do 13 grudnia 1981 r. (wprowadzenia stanu wojennego). Zawiera też opis podziału w par- tii. W artykule została także przedstawiona krytyka działaczy partyjnych wobec stosunku „Gazety Krakowskiej” do „Solidarności”. Główne źródło do badań stanowią artykuły prasowe publikowane na łamach „Gazety Krakowskiej” od września 1980 r. do grudnia 1981 r. T he emergence of the Independent and Self-Governing “Solidarity” Trade Union fol- lowing a wave of strikes on the Polish coast in August 1980 polarized the Polish United Workers’ Party. The article discusses the attitude of the editorial board of the Cracow magazine of the PUWP “Gazeta Krakowska” (“Gazeta Południowa” until 31 December 1980) towards “Solidarity” in the period from September 1980 (i.e. the end of the stri- kes on the coast) until 13 December 1981) (i.e. the introduction of martial law). It also describes divisions within the Party. Based on a critical analysis of source evidence, the author specifies several problems: support for “Solidarity’s” operations, the promotion of a moderate stream within the ISGTU “Solidarity”, the intention to mediate between the PUWP and “Solidarity” and the appeal to both parties to refrain from engaging in a power struggle. Furthermore, the article presents the critical opinions of party acti- vists about the approach of “Gazety Krakowska” toward the “Solidarity” movement. Research was mainly based on press articles published by “Gazeta Krakowska” during the period from September 1980 until December 1981. The article was additionally based on the files stored by the National Archive in Cracow and by the Archive of the Institute of National Remembrance in Cracow. The author also interviewed Jerzy Sadecki and Zbigniew Regucki.

This article is a source study based on information published in Echo Przemyskie – a periodical coming out in Przemyśl at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The literature on the subject, helpful in carrying out an analysis and comparing its results is based on studies by historians (both Polish and foreign) of different specializations, among others researchers of history of Jews, Przemyśl and the press. On the basis of the most frequent and typical descriptions the author attempts to reconstruct the image of a Jew depicted in the periodical in question during the first decade of its publication, often comparing his own conclusions with the results of analyses by other researchers. The structure of the article – after the initial part including the description of the newspaper in question and a brief outline of the reality of Przemyśl in the late 19th century – is based on the description of particular alleged characterological and physical features of Jewish people. In conclusion the author includes recapitulation based on an overall compilation of the previously described characteristics, which he attempts to depict against the background of mainstream Polish writing of that period.

In 2018, we celebrated the 100th anniversary of Poland regaining its independence. The patronage over the solemn celebrations of the National Independence Day was taken by the Sejm of the Republic of Poland (lower house of the bicameral parliament). November 11, 1918 was conventionally adopted as the date of regaining independence by Poland as this date is used since. As a result of the Versailles decisions and geopolitical changes that took place after the end of World War I, Poland reappeared on the map of Europe after 123 years of partitions. The events taking place in 1918 were of great importance for the further fate of the reborn Polish state. Information on getting to know the atmosphere and spirit of the upcoming changes was published in newspapers. Representatives of the "fourth power" analyzed and commented on political and social events taking place on the international arena on an ongoing basis. At that time, the journalistic activity of Bolesław Koskowski in the pages of "Kurier Warszawski" and his active participation in the socio-political life of Warsaw deserves special attention. Koskowski was aware of this as an active political activist and journalist, participates in an epochal event of great importance for future generations of Poles.

Maciej Wirzbięta was a Calvinistic printer active in Cracow in the years 1555-1605. Throughout the period his publishing house operated, Wirzbięta consistently marked his books with a device representing a willow-tree. This was an obvious reference to the printer’s surname (the Polish word wierzba meaning willow-tree), and it provides an example from Poland of the then widely practiced application of puns among printers. It may, therefore, appear that the meaning of Maciej Wirzbięta’s device can be deciphered in a straightforward manner without seeking references to the Bible, Greek or Roman heritage, mediaeval compendia, emblem books or any of the many other sources of knowledge from which publishers frequently drew inspiration to create their devices. The device under discussion does, however, refer to the symbolic language of the Renaissance. It is possible to find Mediaeval illuminations and 16th-century engravings whose composition and content invoke associations with the woodcuts from Wirzbięta’s press.

This year we are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Polish-Bolshevik war and the outbreak of the Second Silesian Uprising. Among results of the Versailles decisions a one redraw Poland on the map of Europe and the country was reborn after 123 years of partitions. These events had a huge impact on the further fate of the reborn Polish state. In the first years after Poland regained independence, the political and military authorities in the country focused on consolidating the pre-partition territories. Also the press played a significant role in this task. In the twenties, journalism was the primary source of knowledge about the surrounding world. Journalists played an important mission in promotion of the fighting spirit and shaping patriotic awareness in the lands of the former partitioning powers. Editorial point of view often strongly influenced the public opinion, becoming an effective weapon in the fight to strengthen the independence move. The journalistic activity of Bolesław Koskowski in the pages of "Kurier Warszawski" fits in a special way and deserves attention. In his numerous articles, we can find confirmation that Warsaw was not indifferent to the struggle to join Upper Silesia to the Motherland.

Among the many publications on the judiciary and the law may indicate little, in which it was subject matter of the social dimension of law. It leaves out the question of the role of sociological and psychological factors that affect the atmosphere of the courtroom, and the perception of the court – sovereign power by coming to him for justice. Pay attention to the topic of creating these factors by the media, whose voice grew in the interwar period louder and louder. Press releases from the courtroom appear quite often in the pages of the local press in Siedlce, aroused particular interest to readers. They were in fact a direct message from the “theater of life”, showed the true story of a man whose guilt had settled usually triple the jury. The accused was against the prosecutor, and sometimes also in the audience, who entered the trial as a real theater, with a ticket in hand. In the lobby we could hear comments on the matter, judge, prosecutor, defender, and above all, the accused and his family. A deep interest in Siedlce court case list is the fact that people often gathered here waiting for the outcome of late. Press information function in addition to meet the educational role. Journalists quickly noticed widely read topics on the right. For this reason, they uploaded more and more articles that explain the essence of the laws and regulations, knowledge of which they considered necessary in everyday life. Press releases related to the crimes committed. Vivid description of the event were acting on the imagination, which had warned the victim and deter potential criminals by showing them the consequences of breaking the law. Please ensure you fully appreciate the role of the press in shaping public opinion on the law, the drafting and enforcement.
