Every professionally managed project is performed accordingly to precise defined principles, methods and a plan. As well, IT projects, which are major business ventures globally these days, are governed with similar approach. Defining objectives and project framework, selecting resources, drafting schedules are a fundamental skills, which can be taught at every basic business course. It seems to be that it is enough to acquire appropriate knowledge in area of project management to be successful IT manager in spite of the size and the type of the venture. Still, only 16% ERP projects are successful, 84% projects do not meet deadlines and business goals and 78% projects overrun budgets. By paradox, to solve above presented business, economic problem it is necessary to address it by developing axiological research. It is based on the principle that empathy is the third perspective that is build in to the well know Game Theory model which consists of two perspectives: trust and loyalty (Deutsch). In this case, in the process of selecting an appropriate type of the game, between a customer and a vendor, we have to base on a better understanding of needs and axiological profiles on both sites. In other words, if the business goal of the partner is better defined and understood and if it is assumed that the success of one site depends on the other, the final effect, by definition, is almost guaranteed. To achieved that, it is a must for every IT manager to work on developing, the so called business empathy instead of just useless promoting the assertive business philosophy.

Social Responsibility concept applies to business, university and individuals. It is assumed that socially responsible thinking supports sustainable development through operations for the sake of stakeholders, who represent groups of interest from three kinds of environment - social, economic and ecological. Usually, there are some balance problem between integration of objectives from those three fields. They appear during project management process, exactly like during company operation processes. Due to this similarity, an idea of integrating Social Responsibility philosophy with project management appeared. The lack of literature connecting those two concepts, resulted in need of creating definition of a socially responsible project as a basis for discussion about socially responsible project approach. Firstly, authors analyzed twenty Polish and twenty English definitions of a „social responsibility” and a „project” by using Google Scholar source. Secondly, by comparing definitions of discussed issues, some new categories were identified and also, the frequency of their occurrence was measured. The research resulted in identifying common features of both definitions and, eventually, creating a definition of a „socially responsible project” - the main purpose of this publication.

The article constitutes an introduction to the broadly-understood area Project Management. On the one hand project management includes managerial pragmatics, i.e. the administration of project enterprises, on the other hand - planning methodology. The latter is focused on the principles and methods of research within the scope of planning any kind of facilities and processes. The text at issue includes the following questions: the interpretation of the notion of project and various interpretations of project management, the structure of research methods, project defining, the procedure of operationisation, the characteristics of research models and controlling lists, the peculiarity of improving and base planning, stages and phases of the planning and execution process.

The article presents a discussion of strategic management with a particular focus on the possibility of using project management as a strategy implementation instrument. It describes selected strategy management paradigms and models. Strategy implementation was treated as the transposition of the model of a “dead” system – the strategic plan – onto a live system, or an organisation realising defined strategic goals. This requires static changes in organisational structure as well as a shift in the mindset and approach to the organisation’s employees. The changes themselves require creativity, innovation and the formation of project groups to carry out the work.

The management environment at the beginning of the XXI century is characterized by high volatility. Development projects should take into account not only certain deliverables but also any opportunities that may arise. These opportunities are called real options. The paper describes a systems approach to various types of real options that can be found in a project’s environment. A method is presented for using such options in the timing problem.

Project management (PM) involves decision-making processes related to reaching project goals, resources allocation, timelines, intended outputs, outcomes, long-term impacts, etc. Decisions create challenges for those involved in leading and managing projects, such as information overload, time constraints, uncertainty, and biases. Decision-making in PM is especially supported by risk analysis focused on the identification and assessment of factors that could affect (positively or negatively) a successful project delivery. Uncertainty in estimating project risks is considered one of the major challenges in Management Science. The paper draws attention to the root cause of uncertainty in human reasoning in relation to decision-making processes with particular emphasis on risk analysis. A literature review revealed that the area of risk assessment in PM has been dominated by qualitative methods that do not take uncertainty into account. Therefore, the main objective of this paper was to apply the Dempster–Shafer theory (DST), which provides a framework for representing uncertainties by allowing beliefs to not be assigned to a specific subset. Accordingly, the applied research design was employed in this study. The re-search sample included 60 experts that assessed project risks. In order to determine the belief (Bel) and plausibility (Pl) functions, all the evidence was combined using Dempster’s rule of combination, in order to arrive at quantified beliefs. The final results of the study showed that this evidence-based framework for project risk assessment is applicable and easy to use, even for a large number of experts and could support PM practitioners in risk management and decision-making.

The paper introduces the influence of theory and practice in project management on the level of project innovation. It approaches the issue from the point of view of exploiting opportunities derived from the high level of innovation and creativity of IT specialists. The article shows the negative effects of a failure on the part of project managers – in both their theory and practice – to anticipate the need to take an individual approach to managing the risks associated with innovation in project venture management as well as to risk management.

A characteristic feature of the knowledge economy in the twenty-first century is the growing importance of enterprise collaboration efforts meant to maintain and strengthen their competitive position. Enterprises can thus more easily achieve set goals and develop their market, financial, and manufacturing potential. Cooperation affects integration between suppliers, leading to the exchange of knowledge and improved management systems and processes. Cooperation plays a significant role in the functioning of the organisation and may significantly boost effectiveness. Rational cooperation both between and within companies can contribute to the actual use of their potential, which is reflected in their further development. An example worthy of attention is cooperation in joint projects, as it is these very projects that generate company progress and development. The purpose of this article is to examine the forms of cooperation in the framework of projects and identify the effects of cooperation and their limitations, as well as to identify the risks that may arise as a result of cooperation.

Theoretical background: The growing importance of remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the development of competences in selected areas of project management prompted the authors to conduct research on a group of 82 respondents working remotely on projects at the Project Management Institute Poland Chapter (PMI PC).Purpose of the article: The aim of the article is to show the impact of remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic on the development of competences in selected areas of project management. The study is theoretical and empirical in nature. The theoretical part shows the factors influencing the development of competences and the conditions of remote work. In the empirical part of the survey, employees' opinions on the impact of remote (online) work during the COVID-19 pandemic on the development of competences in selected areas of project management were presented. Five areas of project management were analysed, including: working time, communication, labour costs, risk and conditions for teamwork.Research methods: Literature review and critical analysis of web research. Factor analysis was used for statistical analyses. To isolate the analysed factors, the principal components method was adopted, and the VARIMAX procedure was used as the rotation method.Main findings: The conclusions of the research confirm the hypothesis that the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on remote work, in particular on employee competences, work time and costs, motivation, effective communication and mutual relations between employees. The results of the research broaden the knowledge on the impact of various factors on remote work and the development of competences in selected areas of project management.

In the research carried out by one of Polish research agencies [Pentor 2010], local administration offices were in general seen as institutions which, despite high expenditures, maintained inefficient operations and as a result did fully satisfy the needs of citizens. In addition, searching for the causes of failures in projects, the lack of professional approach to project management should be highlighted, which relates to the undertaken ad hoc adaptation activities to changes in the environment, and the implementation of projects in interim and in unsystematic way. The research found that the consequence of this state of affairs was the reduction of the effectiveness of implementation of projects and of synergistic effect created by audited entity. As a result, the growing importance of project management in the functioning of local government units in Poland, with low levels of performance previously practiced in this field, tended to take the search for a new approach to project management in the units.

Local production systems (LPS) focused on biomass usage represent a viable alternative to rural development, which can contribute to solve its socio-economic problems in Slovakia. The main objective of this paper was to propose a general framework for the functioning of biomass LPS in rural areas and to summarize the main points for smooth running of biomass LPS projects aimed at the resource base, method of obtaining energy from biomass, energy production cycle and a dialogue with inhabitants of municipalities where biomass LPS are to be located. Lack of experience in implementing such projects was the root cause of problems in Banská Bystrica region. Therefore, access to information, experiences form other countries and the development of appropriate formal and informal linkages are necessary for knowledge transfer and play an important role in managing biomass LPS.

Project risk management is an important aspect of project management. According to the PMBoK, risk management is one of the ten knowledge areas in which a project manager must be competent. Project risk management remains a relatively undeveloped discipline, distinct from the risk management used by operational, fi nancial, and underwriters’ risk management. This gulf is due to several factors: risk aversion (especially public understanding and risk in social activities), confusion in the application of risk management to projects, and the additional sophistication of probability mechanics above those of accounting, fi nance, and engineering. The aim of the presented paper is to demonstrate how to use RIPRAN (the Czech project for risk analysis) as a main part of a feasibility study of a new product project in a manufacturing company. To fulfi ll this primary aim, we formulated these secondary aims:– To provide a critical analysis of the available information sources dealing with risk manage-ment in new product projects in manufacturing companies.– To study and profoundly understand RIPRAN, project risk analysis, its history, application, principles, rules, and exceptions.– To discuss with the author of RIPRAN about the RIPRAN application in new product projects in manufacturing companies of non-Czech origin.– To compile a feasibility study of the new product project. All of these highly cited secondary aims were fulfi lled. A short overview of the risk management topic as well as RIPRAN’s characteristics and defi nition are part of the presented paper. To process this theoretical part of the paper, we used mostly analysis, synthesis, comparison, and deduction. We studied monographs, journals, and internet links with the impact of a source's topicality. The used sources are cited in the list of references. During the process of a feasibil-ity study of a new product project provided through the analysis of our own experience, we discussed the application of the RIPRAN method to the new product project with the author of this method. We realized e-mail correspondence, phone discussions, and fi nally a personal meeting to control the whole RIPRAN analysis document and discuss the method’s application in the non-Czech origin business environment. To fulfi ll the primary aim of the presented paper, we decided to use the case study method.
