Research background: Project portfolio optimization isa  demanding process in the case of considering a large number of project intentions and has so far been the subject of research by many authors, especially foreign authors. However, the issue of project portfolio optimization is an area that is not sufficiently addressed by Slovak authors. This was the main impulse to create a specific mathematical model of integer programming with bivalent variables to optimize the company's project portfolio with the intention to reflect the specific requirements of Slovak companies. Purpose of the article: The aim of the article is to propose a mathematical model of integer programming with bivalent variables to optimize the project portfolio with a focus on Slovak companies. Methods: In accordance with the aim of the article, a questionnaire survey was carried out with the intention of identifying the criteria that are perceived by the managers of Slovak companies as important in the optimization of the project portfolio. These criteria were subsequently reflected in the mathematical model design using the mathematical programming method. Findings & Value added: Based on a literature review aimed at the project portfolio optimization, we have found a gap in considering the compliance of project intentions and strategic objectives of the company within the optimization of the project portfolio. Based on the results of the questionnaire survey, the significance of the mutual compliance of project intentions with the strategic objectives of the company was confirmed from the point of view of Slovak companies. Given the fact that our aim was to create an innovative integer programming model with bivalent variables orientated to the conditions of Slovak companies, we included in the resulting model the criteria that were not considered within the scope of existing research in this area, and which are perceived as important by the Slovak companies.

The result of our research is a developed and implemented set of activities for new process or product development (NPD procedure) for SMEs environment in the plastic processing industry, which enables the production of products and services with a high value added. The developed NPD procedure consists of five consecutive and overlapping steps: attracting orders, designing a project, developing a product, developing a process and zero production series. Each distinct step is further divided into sub-activities supported by adequate methods and managed in an information system. Investigated and included were three different methodologies use for NPD procedure in the automotive industry such as Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP), Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) and Stage/Gate methodology. The results presented in the paper show that the developed NPD procedure significantly improved NPD in terms of cost management and time-effectiveness.

A declarative framework enabling to determine conditions as well as to develop decision-making software supporting small- and medium-sized enterprises aimed at unique, multi-project-like and mass customized oriented production is discussed. A set of unique production orders grouped into portfolio orders is considered. Operations executed along different production orders share available resources following a mutual exclusion protocol. A unique product or production batch is completed while following a given activity’s network order. The problem concerns scheduling a newly inserted project portfolio subject to constraints imposed by a multi-project environment The answers sought are: Can a given project portfolio specified by its cost and completion time be completed within the assumed time period in a manufacturing system in hand? Which manufacturing system capability guarantees the completion of a given project portfolio ordered under assumed cost and time constraints? The considered problems regard finding a computationally effective approach aimed at simultaneous routing and allocation as well as batching and scheduling of a newly ordered project portfolio subject to constraints imposed by a multi-project environment. The main objective is to provide a declarative model enabling to state a constraint satisfaction problem aimed at multi-project-like and mass customized oriented production scheduling. Multiple illustrative examples are discussed.

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie metodyki kategoryzacji projektów w procesie implementacji strategii przedsiębiorstwa. Analiza i kategoryzacja projektów mają znaczenie uniwersalne, niezależne od sposobu rozumienia i formułowania strategii w przedsiębiorstwie. Zastosowanie odpowiedniej metodyki oceny projektów może znacząco usprawnić proces wdrażania strategii. Na początku artykułu omówiono wpływ projektów na efektywność zarządzania rozwojem przedsiębiorstwa, a następnie proces zarządzania portfelem projektów. W drugiej części artykułu zdefiniowano pojęcie kategoryzacji i oceny agregatowej oraz zreferowano etapy proponowanej metodyki kategoryzacji projektów. Zagadnienia podjęte w artykule mogą stanowić podstawę doskonalenia systemu zarządzania projektami, w szczególności usprawniania decyzji w zakresie oceny i doboru przedsięwzięć w procesie realizacji strategii przedsiębiorstwa.

The aim of the article is to present the methodology of project categorization in the process of company’s strategy implementation. The article adopted a hypothesis stating that the analysis and categorization of projects are of universal importance, independent of the way of understanding and formulating strategies in an enterprise. At the beginning of the article, the impact of projects on the effectiveness of enterprise development management is discussed, followed by the project portfolio management process. The second part of the article defines the concept of categorization and discusses the stages of the proposed project categorization methodology. Issues taken up in the article can be the basis for improving the project management system, in particular for improving decisions in the field of evaluation and selection of projects in the process of implementing the company’s strategy.

Zastosowanie teorii sieci w badaniach nad portfelem projektów, przede wszystkim wykorzystanie metody analizy sieciowej (social network analysis – SNA), pozwoliło na opisanie cech sieci projektów.

The increased complexity of projects and the high complexity of managing numerous projects make project portfolio management an area in which network issues still offer inspiring research potential. The theory of organisational networks creates wide possibilities in project portfolio management. The article discusses the application of a network approach in the analysis of project portfolios and indicates new directions in research on project portfolios resulting from the adoption of the network perspective. The article presents three main issues: the concept of the organisational network and its reference to project portfolio management, an interpretation of concepts related to project portfolio management and the network approach to project portfolios. The application of network theory to research on project portfolios, in particular the use of the network analysis method (SNA, or Social Network Analysis), makes it possible to formulate and describe the characteristics of project networks.

Przeprowadzono przegląd i studia literatury w omawianym obszarze.
