We aim in the present paper at illustrating the importance of the myth of Narcissus in Gide’s prose. The recurrence of this myth is a proof of the fact that the writer often resorts to memory in creating his characters. Looking into the mirror, the basic act of the myth of Narcissus, becomes a gesture through which the writer plunges into his past and psychic. Thus, Narcissus turns into a fragmentary, totalising myth, a hallmark of both Gide’s life and work.

The present paper investigates one of the forms of expression and manifestation belonging to popular religiosity, the superstitions, practices through which people get into disagreement with their self and with the ideology advanced by institutions whose declared mission is to investigate and overcome man’s spiritual condition, the Church. There will be looked into, on the one hand, the major types of superstitions that the Romanians have according to a number of variables (ages, gender, education) and, on the other hand, the categories of conflict generated by the superstitious behaviour.

Polski okres działalności Stefana Baleya rozpoczął się w 1928 roku, kiedy zamieszkał w Polsce na stałe. Po przeprowadzce do Warszawy kierował Katedrą Psychologii Wychowawczej Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego oraz pracował w instytucjach, w których jego praktyka łączyła się z pracą teoretyczną. W latach 1928–1934 profesor Baley pracował w Laboratorium Psychotechnicznym w Warszawie. Był członkiem Naczelnej Rady Zdrowia oraz Komitetu Naukowego Instytutu Higieny Psychicznej w Warszawie. Jednym z najważniejszych obszarów jego działalności była praca nad przygotowaniem psychologicznym nauczycieli, głównie podczas wykładów na Uniwersytecie Warszawskim. Stefan Baley prowadził wykłady z psychologii edukacji w różnych polskich szkołach.
