In the years before the First World War, the “Slavic World” was published in Cracow, a monthly devoted to studying the intellectual and cultural life of Slavic nations and presenting the Polish view of Slavic issues in the face of anti-Polish activities and Pan-Slav propaganda among Slavs in the Habsburg Monarchy. The journal was the organ of the “Slavic Club”, the Association of Slavophiles from Cracow. The study presents South Slavic affairs which, along with the Ukrainian and Russian issues, attracted considerable attention of Polish researchers.

Education and research into the history of Slavonic studies in Poland in the past and in the present have taken place on three levels: the general developmental trends in Polish historiography as the leading Slavic historiography, the scale of interest in the other Slavs living in the Polish Commonwealth and the positions of the other Slavic states and nations in Polish historiography and historical education. Research into the history of Slavonic studies in Poland enjoys a noble tradition. Its origin goes back to the late 18th and the early 19th centuries. The research gained institutional support in the second half of the 19th century. In the 20th century, Polish Slavonic studies were rejuvenated in the interwar period, after 1945 (to the largest degree) and after 1989. This was reflected primarily in the notably increasing number of publications. Sadly, the quality of the research remains inferior.

Esej napisany na marginesie dwóch tomów, poświęconych humanistyce w serii książek opublikowanych na jubileusz 200-lecia Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego. Autor eseju dyskutuje zagadnienia poruszane w artykułach i wywiadach z profesorami, jakie zostały zawarte w obu tomach.

The essay is written on the margin of two volumes devoted to the humanities in a series of books published to commemorate the 200 Years of the University of Warsaw. The author discusses the issues placed in the articles and interviews with professors that both volumes contain. His special interest is placed on the shaping of scientific reflection as a separate discipline of thinking, as well as on longevity of some issues and on lessening the importance of other ones. He is preoccupied with the role of the University of Warsaw as, on the one hand, a tool used by the Russians in Poland’s Russification and, on the other hand, with the place of the university in national life. He also focuses his attention on the conditions of conducting studies in the circumstances the scholars experienced and the university’s functioning against the political context. Each of the aforementioned matters reflected the expansion of individual academic disciplines developed at the university. A review of the disciplines as research and didactic fields is intrinsic value of the volumes in question.
