This article deals with sayings, which are supposed to be one of the basic varieties of folk set expressions. Their differentiation and systematisation problems remain urgent both in folklore and linguistics. The main focus is the problem of nuclear element differentiation in sayings corpora, which are made up of proverbs and sayings primarily. This reveals various approaches in defi ning differential features between proverbs and sayings. Expressions of a similar nature and grammatical organisation are often classifi ed in special lexicographic works in different way. This therefore shows the diverse interpretations of the outlined concepts examined in the works of different periods, ranging from the seventeenth century.
