The article presents an analysis of conceptual metaphors used by Darwin to describe artificial and natural selection. It is established that three kinds of metaphorization are employed: objectification to conceptualize artificial selection, and agentification and personification to conceptualize natural selection. It is argued that the evidence of Darwin’s text justifies identifying agentification as a special type of metaphorization. Further it is claimed that the ordering of metaphors: objectification – agentification – personification demonstrates the primacy of objectification with respect to more elaborate metaphors and recapitulates the phylogenetic development of the process of metaphorization. The article also addresses the motivation for Darwin’s anthropocentric language.

Multi-objective optimization (MOO) considers several objectives to find a feasible set of solutions. Selecting a solution from Pareto frontier (PF) solutions requires further effort. This work proposes a new classification procedure that fits into the analytic hierarchy Process (AHP) to pick the best solution. The method classifies PF solutions using pairwise comparison matrices for each objective. Sectorization is the problem of splitting a region into smaller sectors based on multiple objectives. The efficacy of the proposed method is tested in such problems using our instances and real data from a Portuguese delivery company. A non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) is used to obtain PF solutions based on three objectives. The proposed method rapidly selects an appropriate solution. The method was assessed by comparing it with a method based on a weighted composite single-objective function.

A systematic review of the studies on hemoglobin E in Northeast India has been carried out to understand the magnitude of research undertaken on this aspect during the last seven decades. Owing to the high prevalence of hemoglobin E in this part of India different authors have studied this hemoglobin from different perspectives and found conflicting results. However a systematic review of such studies is lacking from a holistic point of view. Most of the epidemiological, in vitro as well as in vivo studies show signatures of selection with this hemoglobin locus. However, how this polymorphism is maintained at different rates at different geographical region is still a matter of contention. This review will fill the gap from all perspectives starting from the frequency distribution of hemoglobin E and its spread in different parts of Northeast India, its relationship with malaria hypothesis, the population migration, population affinity and most importantly the health implication arising out of it. A probable origin of hemoglobin E among an Austroasiatic population of Northeast India has been postulated with the help of advance molecular anthropological knowledge like the deep rooted markers of mt DNA and Y-chromosome haplotypes.

This study attempts to show how Darwin’s 1otebooks provide evidence that the author of the Origin of the Species moved further and further away from various versions of a “system of nature” based on some complex, abstract, finalized order, by combining empirical testing and shifts in the schematic representation of the relations between taxonomic categories.

The paper argues that F. Nietzsche’s magnum opus Thus Spoke Zarathustra can be looked upon as a narrative about the protagonist’s maturation to understand, articulate and accept the thought of the eternal return which is tantamount to accepting the prospect of his own imminent death and the enigma of afterlife. I seek to prove that Zarathustra purposely defers systematic and coherent explanation of his deepest thought, as well as he dismisses its interpretations proposed by his animals, disciples, and by his main enemy – the dwarf. The thought of the eternal return can only be revealed, enacted. For this purpose, Zarathustra must actually die and return and by so doing bestow on the next generations the gift of his secret intuition. It can be argued convincingly that the last two chapters of part IV of Thus Spoke Zarathustra are conceived as a powerful performative reenactment of the thought of the eternal return as a selective force. The force, however, which does not bring a different (resp. “better”, “stronger”…) existence, as Gilles Deleuze would want it, but the very same, identical life.

This article provides a comparative analysis of gender gaps in observable and reservation wages. The analysis shows that women are able to accept lower wages than men before entering the labour market. Men’s and wom-en’s differences in observable characteristics are not at all sufficient to ex-plain the gaps both in observable and reservation wages. The article thus concludes that the prevalence of gender wage gap may be a result of wom-en’s lower self-valuation and not necessarily labour market discrimination against women.

The story of the post-war edition of Krzysztof Kamil Baczyński’s poems entitled Śpiew z pożogi [Song of Fire] (1947) is discussed. The book edited by Stefania Baczyńska and Kazimierz Wyka completely disregarded and differed from the authorial version of Śpiew z pożogi prepared before the outbreak of the Uprising, which was meant to be Baczyński’s official poetic debut. The impact of the post-war edition of Utwory zebrane [Collected works] on the reception of Baczyński’s poetry and the poet’s image in Polish literary culture is discussed.

Sensory experience leads to the initiation of a complex process of thinking about the world. The result of this process are the images of what surrounds us. We definethis action as education. Because looking at the world from the perspective of sensual experience is the potential ability of every human being (Hannah Arendt), education becomes a tool enabling the simulation of the existing world and the one that may appear in the future. About who we are and where we are, who we will decide, the quality of the senses. The quality of the senses translates into the value of the cognitive process. The consequence of the quality of the cognitive process is the collection of information and knowledge. This sensual logic inscribes the action that classifiesus people according to predisposition or ava-ilable information that results from the quality of sensual functioning. As Leonardo da Vinci saw it: “Experience, the intermediary between creative nature and the human race, teaches what nature uses among mortals, that before the necessity of necessity one cannot act differently than reason, his teaching works.”

Giving special emphasis to recruitment, the article describes possible applications of gamification in HRM processes. A prototype selection tool (application) that is based on situational questions incorporating elements of gamification, a description of the competencies being assessed, and diagnostic positions is also characterized. Moreover, the article presents a description of validation studies involving a comparison of results received thanks to the developed application as well as those derived through the use of standard questions as used in selection interviews (situational and behavioral questions). The research indicates satisfactory validity for the developed application. Nevertheless, further studies using varied forms of candidate competency assessment encompassing more diverse groups are essential.

W niniejszym eseju autor proponuje reteoretyzację głównych idei zawartych w książce „Testy edukacyjne. Studium dynamiki selekcji i socjalizacji” (2017) autorstwa Agnieszki Gromkowskiej-Melosik. Przekonania te zapewniają stabilny i społecznie uprawomocniony porządek testowania.

In the essay, the author offers to re-theorize the main ideas of the book Testy edukacyjne. Studium dynamiki selekcji i socjalizacji [Educational Tests. The Study in the Dynamics of the Selection and Socialization] (2017) by Agnieszka Gromkowska-Melosik. Using the examples meticulously described in the book, the author isolates the universal patterns of social changes affected by educational testing whereby the agents involved in the testing at various levels reorient their behaviour. These changes are called testization and are seen to unfold at three levels: testocracy (macro-social level), testolatry (cultural values level) and teaching to the test (micro-social level). Testocracy understood as „governing through tests” is the use of abstract systems as a selection tool. Testocracy understood as „managing through tests” allows for comparative evaluation of educational systems worldwide. Testolatry refers to the cultural beliefs about objectivity and independence of tests. These beliefs secure a stable and socially legitimized order of testing. Finally, teaching to the test modifies the techniques of knowledge transmission and ascribes a higher value to such techniques that are more likely to improve test results.

In the present study I analyzed some aspects of the program of logical empiricism. I devoted particular attention to issues such as demarcation criterion, protocol sentence or logical syntax. These issues have been considered mainly through the prism of the work of Rudolf Carnap, while the contribution of other representatives of the Vienna Circle was rather kind of argumentative background. Mentioned philosophical trend had to stand in the closest possible touch with science. Therefore, fundamentally discredited metaphysical issues as meaningless. According to the author, such a radical distinction between sense and nonsense is unauthorized. Key neo-positivist postulates themselves are based on certain metaphysical assumptions.

Results of Six Sigma projects are related to company performance. Successful Six Sigma projects increase customer satisfaction and have many other positive effects on organisations. Success of Six Sigma projects is related to key management decision about how to identify potential projects and which projects to select for final implementation. This research is oriented toward the study of tools used in the phase of Six Sigma project identification and criteria used in the phase of Six Sigma project selection. The purpose of this research is to compare results from manufacturing sector in Slovenia and the UK. Results of this study indicate that management within the organisations tend to identify potential Six Sigma projects with the use of different tools, such as: brainstorming (Slovenia and UK.), followed by Critical To Quality tree (UK.), and interviews and customer visits (Slovenia). Further, the results show that the final decision about Six Sigma projects selection in the UK and Slovenia include different criteria, such as: customer benefit (Slovenia and UK), finance impact (UK) and connection to business strategy (Slovenia). Many companies in the UK as well in Slovenia combine the use of tools and balanced selection criteria at the same time.

The purpose of this article is to outline the cognitive model of organizational evolution taking into account the routines. Organizational evolution requires explanation and understanding of the mechanisms of development: variation, selection and retention. It is necessary also to define the object of evolution. The research results show that organizational routines constitute that object. As for the research purposes, it is important to determine the types of organizational routines. The logic of Nelson and Winter presents that routines appear as operating, generic, and search ones. As a result of the findings in the article, a cognitive model of organizational evolution has been proposed, in which organizational routines are the objects that affect the pattern of organization’s behavior and consequently its effectiveness, which in evolutionary terms is manifested by organization’s survival

Rutyny w procesie organizacyjnej ewolucji Celem artykułu jest zarysowanie modelu poznania organizacyjnej ewolucji uwzględniającego rutyny. Organizacyjna ewolucja wymaga wyjaśnienia i zrozumienia mechanizmów rozwoju, czyli różnicowania, selekcji i retencji.

Adaptation of life to the environment occurs at two levels - that of an individual and that of a population. In the first step of the process of adaptation variability is produced. It provides necessary material for the second step - selection. Variability is generated during the phylogeny, from one generation to the next. However, variability can also be generated during individual ontogeny at least by protective mechanisms of instinctive behaviors of animals and conscious cultural human actions. Variability originates from point mutations and chromosomal aberrations occurring during transmission of genetic material from generation to generation and through activation, or deactivation, of genes that alters their expression. This variability determines phenotypic differences among individuals. Variability thus produced is subjected to selection because how a phenotype is formed determines its ability to survive and to produce offspring. In human populations, adaptation occurs via biological and via cultural processes. Humans with their culture - especially medicine and social care - protect lives of individuals who otherwise would have been eliminated by natural selection.Hereditary differences among various geographic groups of modern people occur with low frequency - just a fraction of a percentage point. From observations of phenotypes it can be concluded that both structural alterations in the DNA and differences in gene expression cause variations, the majority of genes are inactive at various stages of ontogeny, while various portions of the genotype become active at different times in the life of an individual.Environment influences variation in three ways: (1) by causing mutations or by altering gene expression and (2) by providing conditions for the formation of a phenotype coded by a particular genotype and (3) as a factor of selection, including occurrence of cultural behaviors modifying effects of natural selection. It seems that the main aim of future research in human ecology should be search for the answer to following questions: 1. Can gene expression be changed during ontogeny? 2. To what extent such changes can be inherited? 3. To what extent is there an increase in the occurrence of genes that do not allow survival without special care (genetic load), and 4. How will all this influence future of our species?

Enterprises from the Lodz region which have been internationally active between 2005 and 2011 were generally more productive than those active onlylocally. When it comes to productivity, the best results were achieved by direct investors, importers (of investment and intermediate goods) and exporters. Productivity determined internationalization through FDI and imports. In case of exports there was no such relationship, known as self-selection and confirmed in many other studies. Aspects not included in the study have been deemed as decisive for becoming an exporter. Involvement with international markets was also the source of synergy, since operators who were internationally present in a multitude of platforms achieved the highest level of productivity in the region. They were also usually larger businesses with longer track record, often internationally owned, which better coped with the crisis in 2009–2011. They were also more rarely influenced by political affiliations of any kind. However, it would be difficult to clearly point to specific industries preferred by international players. The region did not have any specific specialization profile. Regional government should strive for having the biggest possible population of internationally present enterprises. It means it should offer preferences to potential exporters, importers and investors, regardless of the size of the business and its sector of activity. The purpose is best served by creating favorable conditions for enterprises and horizontal aid schemes.
